The first Biathlon World Championships (BWCH) was held in 1958, with individual and team contests for men. The number of events has grown significantly over the years. Beginning in 1984, women biathletes had their own World Championships, and finally, from 1989, both genders have been participating in joint Biathlon World Championships. In 1978 the development was enhanced by the change from the large army rifle calibre to a small bore rifle, while the range to the target was reduced from 150 to 50 meters.

The 2010 World Championship of Ski Mountaineering was the first World Championship of Ski Mountaineering sanctioned by the International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF), successor organization of the International Council for Ski Mountaineering Competitions (ISMC). The competition was held in the skiing area of Gran Valira in the Pyrenees, Andorra, from March 1 to March 6, 2010. This was decided by the ISMC in 2006. The event was supported by the Federació Andorrana de Muntanyisme (FAM) and the Club Pirinenc Andorrà (CPA). Andorra was also venue of the European Championship of Ski Mountaineering in 2005.
The 2007 European Championship of Ski Mountaineering was the seventh European Championship of ski mountaineering and was held in Avoriaz, Morzine between the Mont Blanc and the Lac Léman from March 24 - 28.

Andrzej Leszek Bargiel is a Polish ski mountaineer, backcountry skier, mountain runner and climber. Raised in Łętownia, he is a three-time Polish ski mountaineering champion and held third place in the overall World Cup. He is the current record holder in taking the least amount of time to achieve the Snow Leopard award. He is also the current record holder in the Elbrus Race. Since 2013, he has been running his original HIC SUNT LEONES project, the goal of which are speedy, oxygenless ascents and ski descents from the highest mountain peaks on Earth. These included Shishapangma in 2013, Manaslu in 2014, Broad Peak in 2015, and K2 in 2018. He lives in Zakopane, Poland.
