Since 2014 along with neighboring Donbass Arena, it became a property of the Donetsk People's Republic. It has a capacity of 25,678 people. In 2014, the stadium's ownership has changed.

The club has been featured regularly in the Ukrainian Second Division it serves as a junior team for the FC Metalurh Zaporizhzhia franchise. Serhiy Ilarionovych Zaytsev is a former Ukrainian professional football defender who played for different Ukrainian and foreign clubs.

The 2012 Ukrainian Cup Final was a football match that was played at the Olimpiysky NSC, Kiev, on 6 May 2012. The match was the 21st Ukrainian Cup Final and was contested by Metalurh Donetsk and Shakhtar Donetsk. This was the first time since 2007 that the Cup final had returned to Kiev. Since Shakhtar had qualified for the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League, Metalurh would qualify for the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League. In the draw, Metalurh was selected as the home team.

The qualifying round of the 2002–03 UEFA Cup was contested from 13 to 29 August 2002. A total of 82 teams participated in this round, which decided 41 of the 96 places in the first round.

The 2015–16 Ukrainian Premier League season is the 25th top level football competitions since the fall of the Soviet Union and the eighth since the establishment of the Ukrainian Premier League. Because of sponsorship the league changed its title for 2015–16 season to League Parimatch. The competition commenced on 17 July when Metalurh Zaporizhya hosted Zorya Luhansk in Zaporizhzhia. The first sixteen rounds were played before the winter break which began 6 December 2015; the competition resumed on 5 March 2016. The season concluded on 15 May 2016. Dynamo Kyiv are the defending champions. With the continuation of the Ukrainian crisis in the oblasts of Donetsk and Luhansk, the league remained at 14 teams after being cut from 16 in the 2013–14 season.
