The team was led by fourth-year head coach Gary Waters and played their home games at the Wolstein Center. They finished the season 16–17, 10–8 in Horizon League play and lost in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Horizon League Men's Basketball Tournament. It was the 79th season of Cleveland State basketball.
Cleveland State University (CSU) is a public research university in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, United States. It was established in 1964, and opened for classes in 1965 after acquiring the buildings, property, and students of Fenn College, a private school that had been in operation since 1923. CSU absorbed the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1969. Today it is part of the University System of Ohio, has more than 120,000 alumni, and offers over 200 academic programs.
Gary Steven Waters is an American college basketball coach and the men's basketball former head coach at Cleveland State University.
The Bert L. and Iris S. Wolstein Center, often called "The Convo", is an indoor arena located in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, United States, on the campus of Cleveland State University. It is home to the Cleveland State Vikings men's and women's basketball teams and the former home of the Cleveland Crunch and Cleveland Force of the NPSL and MISL. The building opened in 1991 as a replacement for Woodling Gym and was known until 2005 as the CSU Convocation Center. It is named for Bert L. Wolstein, a Cleveland State alumnus. The main arena is known as Henry J. Goodman Arena, and is named for a former CSU trustee. It seats 13,610 for basketball, and with additional floor seating can hold 15,000 for concerts and professional wrestling. In addition to the arena, the Wolstein Center also has a practice gym and grand ballroom. It is the largest basketball arena in the Horizon League and the second-largest college basketball arena in Ohio by seating capacity.

The International Basketball Federation, more commonly known as FIBA, from its French name Fédération internationale de basket-ball, is an association of national organizations which governs the sport of basketball worldwide. Originally known as the Fédération internationale de basket-ball amateur, in 1989 it dropped the word amateur from its name but retained the acronym; the "BA" now represents the first two letters of basketball.

The Horizon League is a 10-school collegiate athletic conference in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I, whose members are located in and near the Midwestern United States.
The Cleveland State Vikings, or Vikes, are the athletic teams of Cleveland State University. Before as Fenn College they were known as the Fenn College Foxes or Fenn Foxes. Cleveland State competes in NCAA Division I. They have been a member of the NCAA Division I since 1972. They were previously a member of the NCAA College Division, a precursor to NCAA Division II. The university is a member of the Horizon League (1994–present) and Eastern Wrestling League (1978–present). Cleveland State was formerly in the Mid-Continent Conference (1982–1994) and North Star Conference (1989–1992). Cleveland State previously fielded baseball, men's cross country as well as men and women's track and field. As Fenn College they fielded men's ice hockey and rifle. Cleveland State has a number of club sports as well.

The highlight of the season was arguably when the Vikings went on a four-game winning streak defeating Miami (FL), John Carroll, Delaware, and Kent State. It was the 76th season of Cleveland State basketball.

In 2004–05, the Vikings finished 9–17. Cleveland State played for the first time since late in the 1990–91 season in Woodling Gym, which served as the home of Viking men's basketball from the 1972–73 season until the Wolstein Center opened prior to the 1991–92 season. The win against Rochester College raised CSU's all-time record in the building to 123–21. It was the 75th season of Cleveland State basketball.
The Wright State Raiders men's basketball is the men's college basketball team that represents Wright State University in Fairborn, Ohio. The school's team currently competes in the Horizon League at the NCAA Division I level. The Raiders won their only national championship in 1983 as an NCAA Division II school. They have made a total of three NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament appearances. The Raiders play their home games at the Nutter Center, often nicknamed the "Nutt House". The official capacity for basketball games is 10,000.

The 2009 Horizon League Men's Basketball Tournament was held at the end of the 2008–2009 regular season. The better seed hosted each first round match. The second and third rounds were played at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The championship game was played at the home court of the highest remaining seed, also Hinkle Fieldhouse, the home court of the Butler men's basketball team.
Marcelo "Marcelinho" Tieppo Huertas is a Brazilian-Italian professional basketball player for Baskonia of the Liga ACB and the EuroLeague. He is also a member of the senior men's Brazilian national basketball team, and holds Italian citizenship.
Gordon Daniel Hayward is an American professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played two seasons of college basketball for Butler University, and was selected as the ninth overall pick by the Utah Jazz in the 2010 NBA draft. He played seven seasons in Utah before signing with Boston in 2017. In college, Hayward led Butler to the championship game of the 2010 NCAA Tournament. In 2017, Hayward was selected an NBA All-Star for the first time.

They finished the season 14–18, 5–11 in Horizon League play to finish in eighth place. They lost in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament to UIC.
Kendrick Melvin Nunn is an American basketball player for the Santa Cruz Warriors of the NBA G League. He played college basketball for the Oakland Golden Grizzlies men's basketball team. Nunn sat out a season due to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) transfer rules. Nunn previously played three seasons at the University of Illinois. He was dismissed from the team following the 2015–16 season. He was named to the 2013–14 Big Ten season All-Freshman team. He was the 2018 Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Year after leading the nation in three point shots made per game.

It was the 84th season of Cleveland State basketball. They finished the season 19–15, 11–5 in Horizona League play to finish in a tie for third place. They advanced to the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament where they lost to Valparaiso. They were invited to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament where they defeated Western Michigan in the first round before losing in the second round to NJIT.

As the No. 8 seed at the Horizon League Tournament, they defeated Youngstown State and upset No. 1 seed Northern Kentucky and No. 4 seed Oakland to advance to the championship game where they lost to Wright State.
