Younis Mahmoud Khalaf is an Iraqi former professional footballer who played as a striker for the Iraq national football team and is currently the second vice-president of the Iraq Football Association. One of the country's greatest ever players, Mahmoud captained the team for ten straight years and became an icon of Asian football. He also played for a number of clubs including teams in Iraq, UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, breaking numerous records including becoming the first player in Qatar to score two hat-tricks in the same game.
Mahdi Karim Ajeel is a former Iraqi footballer. He last played as a winger for Al-Talaba in Iraq and the Iraq national football team.
Al-Talaba Sports Club is an Iraqi sports club based in Al-Rusafa, Baghdad. Its football team competes in the Iraqi Premier League, the top flight of Iraqi football. Founded as Al-Jamiea Football Club in 1969, the club became known as Al-Talaba in 1977. Their home stadium is Al-Talaba Stadium.
Hussein Saeed Mohammed is a retired Iraqi footballer who played as a forward for the Iraqi Premier League club Al-Talaba and the Iraqi national team and is a former president of the Iraq Football Association. Saeed is in seventh place in the list of top international goal scorers, with 78 goals. Along with Ahmed Radhi, he is considered to be the best Iraqi player of the 20th century and features in 25th place in Asia's Best Players of the Century list. Hussein is currently the Iraqi national team's highest scoring player with 78 goals.

Salam Shaker Ali Dad is a former Iraqi professional footballer of Kurdish origin who plays for Al-Talaba. He played for the Iraq national football team until 2016. He was part of the Iraqi team that finished fourth in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup. Salam was first called up to the Iraqi B team in the 2007 King's Cup. He played his first international match against Jordan in a friendly on 24 January 2008.

The Baghdad derbies are a series of derby matches between four Baghdad-based football clubs: Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Al-Shorta, Al-Talaba and Al-Zawraa, collectively known as the 'Popular Clubs'. They are the four most successful teams in the history of Iraqi football, and all league games between the clubs are played at the neutral venue of Al-Shaab Stadium to accommodate more spectators. The match between Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya and Al-Zawraa is often referred to as the Iraqi El Clásico.
