Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko emerged PDP's candidate in the primary election, scoring 956 votes and defeating his two rivals Abubakar Gada and Yusuf Suleiman who polled no votes. He chose Muktar Shagari as his running mate. [15] [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [22] [23] [24] [25] [26]

Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko from the PDP won the election defeating other 29 candidates. The total number of registered voters in the state was 2,453,857, total votes cast was 728,108, valid votes was 684,490 and rejected votes was 43,618. The 2023 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held for state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states. All but three elections were held on 18 March—concurrent with elections to every state house of assembly, three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections—while the Imo State, Kogi State, and Bayelsa State elections will be held on 11 November. The last regular gubernatorial elections for all states were in 2019. All states have a two term limit for Governors which makes 18 incumbent governors ineligible for re-election.

Incumbent APC Governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai was term-limited and could not seek re-election to a third term. Nasir Idris, a teachers' union leader, held the office for the APC by a margin of 6% over the PDP nominee — former Army major general Aminu Bande.

Incumbent All Progressives Congress Governor Bello Matawalle was eligible for re-election but defeated by banker Dauda Lawal — the nominee of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The 2019 Nigerian Senate election in Sokoto State was held on February 23, 2019, to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Sokoto State. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko representing Sokoto North, Shehu Abubakar Tambuwal representing Sokoto South and Abdullahi Ibrahim Gobir representing Sokoto East all won on the platform of All Progressives Congress. But the Court of Appeal Sokoto Division on 30 October 2019 sacked Shehu Abubakar Tambuwal representing Sokoto South on the platform of All Progressives Congress. Ibrahim Abdullahi Danbaba on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party replaced the sacked senator.

The 2019 Sokoto State House of Assembly election was held on March 9, 2019, to elect members of the Sokoto State House of Assembly in Nigeria. All the 30 seats were up for election in the Sokoto State House of Assembly.

The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Sokoto State will be held on 25 February 2023, to elect the 3 federal Senators from Sokoto State, one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections will coincide with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.
