The 2013 Big South Conference football season began on Thursday, August 29 and concluded in December with the 2014 NCAA Division I Football Championship. The regular season concluded on November 23, and Coastal Carolina won the conference's regular season championship and automatic bid to the playoffs. The Chanticleers defeated Bethune-Cookman in the first round and Montana in the second round before falling to eventual champion North Dakota State in the quarterfinals. [1]
The Big South Conference is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA's Division I. Originally a non-football conference, the Big South began sponsoring football in 2002. Its football teams are part of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Big South, founded in 1983, is firmly rooted in the South Atlantic region of the United States, with full member institutions located in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia with associate members in Georgia and New Jersey.
The 2013 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers football team represented Coastal Carolina University in the 2013 NCAA Division I FCS football season. They were led by second-year head coach Joe Moglia and played their home games at Brooks Stadium. They were a member of the Big South Conference. They finished the season 12–3, 4–1 in Big South play to share the conference title with Liberty. Due to their win over Liberty, they received the conference's automatic bid to the FCS playoffs. They defeated Bethune-Cookman and Montana to advance to the quarterfinals, where they lost to North Dakota State.
The 2013 Montana Grizzlies football team represented the University of Montana in the 2013 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Grizzlies were led by second-year head coach Mick Delaney and played their home games on campus at Washington–Grizzly Stadium. Montana participated as a member of the Big Sky Conference, of which they are a charter member. They finished the season 10–3, 6–2 in Big Sky play to finish in third place. They received an at-large bid to the FCS Playoffs where they lost in the second round to Coastal Carolina.

The Liberty Flames is the college football program representing Liberty University, located in Lynchburg, Virginia. The Flames currently compete in NCAA Division I FBS as an independent. The school announced it would start a transition to the top level of NCAA football, Division I FBS, in July 2017. The Flames became a provisional FBS member, playing as an independent, in 2018, and will become a full FBS member, including bowl eligibility, in 2019.
The 2009 VMI Keydets football team represented the Virginia Military Institute during the 2009 NCAA Division I FCS football season. It was VMI's 119th all-time football season which started in 1891. They competed in the Big South Conference, and they were led by 2nd year head coach Sparky Woods, who was appointed VMI's 30th head coach in 2008. VMI played its home games at Alumni Memorial Field, as they still do ever since 1962.
The 2012 Big South Men's Basketball Tournament took place February 27, 29, March 1, and March 3, 2012. The semifinals were televised on ESPNU, and the championship on ESPN2. It was the first year the Big South introduced a first round that consisted of 2 games to be held on campus sites of the higher seeds. VMI and High Point defeated Radford and Gardner-Webb, respectively, to advance to the quarterfinals, held at UNC Asheville's Kimmel Arena along with the semifinals.
The 2011–12 The Citadel Bulldogs basketball team represented The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in the 2011-12 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Bulldogs were led by second year head coach Chuck Driesell and played their home games at McAlister Field House. They are a member of the South Division of the Southern Conference. They finished the season 6–24, 3–15 in SoCon play to finish in last place in the South Division. They lost in the first round of the SoCon Basketball Tournament to Western Carolina.
The 2011 Southern Conference football season began on Thursday, September 1, 2011 with Western Carolina visiting Georgia Southern. The season ended in the semifinals of the NCAA Division I Football Championship, with Georgia Southern losing to North Dakota State.
The 2011–12 Davidson Wildcats men's basketball team represented Davidson College in NCAA men's Division I competition. The Wildcats were coached by Bob McKillop in his 23rd year and played their home games at John M. Belk Arena. They compete in the Southern Conference's South Division. They finished the season 25–8, 16–2 in SoCon play to be crowned South Division Champions and overall regular season champions. They were the champions of the SoCon Basketball Tournament to earn the conference's automatic bid into the 2012 NCAA Tournament where they lost in the first round to Louisville.
The 2011–12 Furman Paladins men's basketball team represents Furman University during the 2011–12 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Paladins, led by 6th year head coach Jeff Jackson, play their home games at Timmons Arena and are members of the Southern Conference's South Division.
The 2012 Southern Conference football season, part of the 2012 NCAA Division I FCS football season competition of college football, began on Thursday, August 30, 2012 with Western Carolina hosting Mars Hill. The regular season concluded on November 17, while Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, and Wofford qualified for the NCAA Division I Football Championship.

The Chanticleers were led by eighth-year head coach David Bennett and played their home games at Brooks Stadium. Coastal Carolina competed as a member of the Big South Conference. They finished the season 6–6 with a 5–1 record in conference play and were conference co-champions with Liberty and Stony Brook. The Chanticleers received the Big South's automatic bid to compete in the FCS playoffs, where they lost to Western Illinois in the first round. Coastal Carolina played a five-overtime game against Towson on September 11, the longest in school history.
The 2013 Charlotte 49ers football team represented the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in the 2013 NCAA Division I FCS football season. 2013 was the inaugural season for 49ers football and they were classified as an FCS independent school, meaning they had no athletic conference affiliation for the 2013 season. The team was led by first time head coach Brad Lambert and played its home games on campus at the newly built Jerry Richardson Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. As the team was in their two-year transition period before reclassifying to the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), they were ineligible to participate in the FCS playoffs.

The Citadel Bulldogs baseball represents The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in college baseball at the NCAA Division I level. The program was established in 1899, and has continuously fielded a team since 1947. Their primary rivals are College of Charleston, Furman and VMI.
The 2003 Big South Conference football season was the second football season for the Big South Conference. The season began on Saturday, August 30, 2003 and concluded on November 22. The Gardner–Webb Runnin' Bulldogs won the conference's regular season championship, their second consecutive title.
