Originally a non-football conference, the Big South began sponsoring football in 2002 as part of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The 2011–12 Davidson Wildcats men's basketball team represented Davidson College in NCAA men's Division I competition. The Wildcats were coached by Bob McKillop in his 23rd year and played their home games at John M. Belk Arena. They compete in the Southern Conference's South Division. They finished the season 25–8, 16–2 in SoCon play to be crowned South Division Champions and overall regular season champions. They were the champions of the SoCon Basketball tournament to earn the conference's automatic bid into the 2012 NCAA tournament where they lost in the first round to Louisville.

The 2014 Liberty Flames football team represented Liberty University in the 2014 NCAA Division I FCS football season. They were led by third-year head coach Turner Gill and played their home games at Williams Stadium. They were a member of the Big South Conference. They finished the season 9–4, 4–1 in Big South play to share the conference championship with Coastal Carolina. They received the Big South's automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs where they defeated James Madison in the first round before losing in the second round to Villanova.

The Citadel Bulldogs baseball represents The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in college baseball at the NCAA Division I level. The program was established in 1899, and has continuously fielded a team since 1947. Their primary rivals are College of Charleston, Furman and VMI.

The 2013 Big South Conference football season began on Thursday, August 29 and concluded in December with the 2014 NCAA Division I Football Championship. The regular season concluded on November 23, and Coastal Carolina won the conference's regular season championship and automatic bid to the playoffs. The Chanticleers defeated Bethune-Cookman in the first round and Montana in the second round before falling to eventual champion North Dakota State in the quarterfinals.

The 2017 Presbyterian Blue Hose football team represented Presbyterian College in the 2017 NCAA Division I FCS football season. They were led by first-year head coach Tommy Spangler, who was in his second stint as PC head coach, as he coached the Blue Hose from 2001–06. The Blue Hose played their home games at Bailey Memorial Stadium and as a member of the Big South Conference. They finished the season 4–7, 1–4 in Big South play to finish in fifth place.
