The 2014-15 Santiago Island League (North) season was the competition of the second-tier football in the northern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. Its started on 20 December 2014 [1] and finished on 3 May 2015. The competition was organized by the Santiago North Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol de Santiago Norte, ARFSN). [2] Beira-Mar won their first and only title and was the next in the nation to win their first.

Association football team field sport

Santiago, Cape Verde largest island of Cape Verde

Santiago is the largest island of Cape Verde, its most important agricultural centre and home to half the nation’s population. Part of the Sotavento Islands, it lies between the islands of Maio and Fogo. It was the first of the islands to be settled: the town of Ribeira Grande was founded in 1462. Grémio Nhagar was the defending team of the title. A total of 13 clubs participated in the competition, the first four clubs advanced into the second and final phase and the club with the highest number of points was a winner in week 6. There were a total of 90 matches, 72 in the first phase and 12 in the second and final phase.

A total of 202 goals were scored.

Overview

It was the final season where neither club were relegated, in the following season, the competition became two-tier with the championships commonly called the Premier and the creation of the Second Division.

The Santiago Island League (North) is a regional championship played in Santiago Island, Cape Verde. The competittion are organized by the Santiago North Regional Football Association. The winner of the championship plays in Cape Verdean football Championships of each season.

The biggest win was on May 3 where Beira-Mar defeated Desportivo Sta. Cruz 0-6. The biggest home win was on February 28 where Desportivo Calheta defeated União Picos 6 - 1.

First phase

In the first phase, Beira Mar took the lead in round 1, then Flor Jovem for the remainder of the phase with the exception of the third and fourth rounds which were taken by Grèmio Nhágar and Santa Cruz at the tenth round.

Flor Jovem, Santa Cruz, Varandinha and Beira Mar qualified into the final phase. Grémio Nhagar scored the most with 21 goals and Real Júnior with the least with nine. On the opposites, Flor Jovem conceded the least with three goals and União Picos the most with 26 goals.

Second phase

Varandinha took the lead in the first four rounds, then Beira Mar took in the last two rounds.

Beira Mar scored the most with eleven goals and Flor Jovem and Santa Cruz scored the least with four. On the opposites, Beira Mar conceded the least with four and Desportivo conceded the most numbering ten.

Santa Cruz is a concelho (municipality) of Cape Verde. It is situated in the eastern part of the island of Santiago. Its seat is the city Pedra Badejo. Its population was 26,617 at the 2010 census, and its area is 112.2 km2.

Estrela dos Amadores

Clube de Futebol Estrela dos Amadores is a football (soccer) club that plays in the Santiago Island League North Zone in Cape Verde. The team is based in the town of Tarrafal in the northern part of the island of Santiago and are one of the oldest clubs in the area. Since the implementation of the two tier regional system in 2015, Estrela dos Amadores are one of ten unrelegated clubs of the North Zone of Santiago.

CS Mindelense won the record breaking title and became the second club after Sporting Praia to win four in a row, the highest ever, also it was Mindelense's last. Mindelense chose to not participate in the CAF Champions League competition in 2017, Académica do Porto Novo did not participate in the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup, both of the clubs due to financial concerns, of any club, it is the eighth consecutive time and becomes the recent African nation not to bring a champion to the continentals for the most consecutive years, in the cup competition, Cape Verde is the longest for not bringing a club in Africa lasting for more than 15 years straight, not even the three national cup winners competed. Mindelense qualfiied and participated in the 2017 National Championships.

Grémio Desportivo de Nhagar, not often with an accented a as Nhágar is a football club that plays in the Premier division of the Santiago North Zone League in Cape Verde. It is based in the neighborhood of Nhàgar in the city of Assomada in the middle of the island of Santiago and plays in the Cumbém Stadium with a capacity that serves 5,000. Since the implementation of the two tier regional system in 2015, Grémio Nhágar are one of ten unrelegated clubs of northern Santiago. Its current chairman as of 2014 is Mandel da Lomba since October 24, 2014.

Sports in Santiago, Cape Verde

The island of Santiago in Cape Verde in the middle of the Sotavento Islands is home to several teams and clubs. The major professional clubs are Sporting Praia, Boavista Praia and CD Travadores, semi-pro teams includes Académica da Praia and Desportivo da Praia. From its foundation in 1953 to 1999, the island had a single league of each sport. Since that time, the association and competition are currently divided into two zones, the north and the south and includes all sports including football, basketball, volleyball, futsal and athletics, the only island to have nearly all the sport competitions into two zones.

Estádio de Mangue

Estádio de Mangue or Estádio Municipal do Tarrafal is a multi-purpose stadium in the neighborhood of Mangue in Tarrafal, Cape Verde nearly 100 meters north of the communal boundary of Chão Bom and just west of the Assomada-Tarrafal Road (EN1-ST01). It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium holds 200 people and its dimensions is 105 x 67 meters. It is one of four that are operated by the Santiago North Regional Football Association (ARFSN). The stadium is home to Tarrafal's best clubs including Amabox Barcelona, Beira-Mar, Estrela dos Amadores and Varandinha. All clubs participate in the Santiago Island League North Zone. Other teams that base in another part include AEF Chão Bom. Since 2015, it is also the home field of Delta Cultura currently playing in the regional Second Division. Tarrafal's Health Center is east of the stadium.

Estádio Municipal 25 de Julho

Estádio Municipal 25 de Julho is a multi-purpose stadium in the town of Pedra Badejo in the municipality of Santa Cruz on the east of Santiago Island, Cape Verde, it is hundreds of meters west of the center and the Atlantic and hundreds of meters north of the old Praia-Pedra Badejo-Tarrafal highway. The stadium is named after one of the holidays celebrated on July 25. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium holds 1,00 people and its dimensions is 100 x 64 meters. It is operated by the Santiago North Regional Football Association (ARFSN). The stadium is home to Pedra Badejo's best clubs including Scorpion Vermelho, Benfica and Desportivo. All clubs participate in the Santiago Island League North Zone.

The 2015-16 Santiago Island League (North) season was the competition of the second-tier football in the northern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. Its started on 12 December 2015 and finished on 8 May 2016. The tournament was organized by the Santiago North Regional Football Association. It was the first ever season without any group stage and would become the longest of any of the regional leagues in Cape Verde and the only that occurred as the following season became the same as the South Zone's. Varandinha won their first and only title after finishing a record breaking 63 points and a record 20 wins, the highest of any of the island leagues in the nation and competed in the national championships. It was one of the newest clubs to win their first titles of any island/regional league in the nation.

It is based in the town of Calheta de São Miguel in the island of Santiago and plays at Estádio Municipal 25 de Julho located northwest of the city center. Since the implementation of the two tier regional system in 2015, the club are one of ten unrelegated clubs of northern Santiago.

The stadium is home to Calheta's best clubs including AJAC, Desportivo da Calheta and Flor Jovem, recently it is the home field of ADEC. All clubs participate in the Santiago Island League North Zone, two in the Premier Division and ADEC in the Second Division.

The 2016-17 Santiago Island League (North) season was the 16th competition of the second-tier football in the northern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. Its started on 17 December 2015 and finished on 7 May 2016 and was shorter than last season. The tournament was organized by the Santiago North Regional Football Association. It was the first ever season without any group stage and would become the longest of any of the regional leagues in Cape Verde and the only that occurred as the following season became the same as the South Zone's. AJAC da Calheta won their first and only title after finishing a record breaking 48 points and a record 15 wins and competed in the national championships. It was one of the newest clubs to win their first titles of any island/regional league in the nation. Also it was the fourth straight time that a club competed for the first time at the nationals and Santiago North being the only one in the country to do so.
