The 2014 Giro d'Italia Femminile, or 2014 Giro Rosa, was the 25th running of the Giro d'Italia Femminile, the only remaining women's Grand Tour and the most prestigious stage race on the 2014 women's road cycling calendar. It was held over ten stages (nine stages plus a prologue) from 4 July to 13 July 2014, starting in Caserta and finishing in Madonna del Ghisallo. [1]

Contents

Last years champion, Mara Abbott, sought to defend her title riding for the UnitedHealthcare team. Five-time winner Fabiana Luperini rode in the race for the 13th time, and plans to retire after the race. [2]

Other highly regarded competitors included; British National Time Trial Champion Emma Pooley (Lotto–Belisol Ladies), Olympic and World Road Race Champion Marianne Vos (Rabo–Liv), current World Time Trial Champion Ellen van Dijk (Boels–Dolmans), Evelyn Stevens (Specialized–lululemon), Alena Amialiusik (Astana BePink), Emma Johansson (Orica–AIS), Giorgia Bronzini and Linda Villumsen (Wiggle–Honda) and finally Elisa Longo Borghini (Hitec Products).

Time bonuses

Time bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 seconds are awarded to the first three riders across the finish line of each stage (except the prologue). Time bonuses of 3, 2, and 1 seconds are awarded to the first three riders to cross the line of each intermediate sprint. [3]

Monte Zoncolan is a mountain in the Carnic Alps, located in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy, with an elevation of 1,750 metres (5,740 ft). It is one of the most demanding climbs in professional road bicycle racing, having been used in the Giro d'Italia seven times and the Giro d'Italia Femminile twice. Gilberto Simoni was the winner of the first two stages finishing on Monte Zoncolan in the men's Giro while Ivan Basso won in 2010, Igor Antón won in 2011, Michael Rogers won in 2014 and Fabiana Luperini won at the first visit in the women's race. Fabiana Luperini is an Italian professional cyclist. She was born in Pontedera, Italy. Luperini has won the Giro d'Italia Femminile a record five times, with four consecutive victories in 1995–1998 and a fifth ten years later, in 2008. She has won the Grande Boucle Féminine Internationale three times consecutively, from 1995 to 1997. In 1998, she won the Tour de l'Aude Cycliste Féminin, and in 2006 she won the Iurreta-Emakumeen Bira.

The 2010 Giro di Lombardia was the 104th edition of this single-day classic cycling race, colloquially known as the "Race of the Falling Leaves". The event took place 16 October 2010. It was the final event of the 2010 UCI World Ranking and the final major event of the 2010 road racing season. The 2012 Giro d'Italia Femminile, or Giro Donne, was the 23rd running of the Giro d'Italia Femminile, the most prestigious stage race on the women's road cycling calendar. It was held over nine stages from 29 June to 7 July 2012, starting in Naples and finishing in Bergamo. Anna van der Breggen is a Dutch former professional road bicycle racer, who rode professionally between 2009 and 2021 for Team Flexpoint, Sengers Ladies Cycling Team, Rabo–Liv and SD Worx. She won the gold medal in the women's road race at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and has won the Giro d'Italia Femminile on four occasions. In 2018 and 2020, she won the women's road race at the UCI Road World Championships.

It was the eighth stage race of the 2014 Women's Elite cycling calendar, and was the only race in Luxembourg, apart from the National Championships, on this calendar.

The 2013 season was the eleventh for the Specialized–lululemon cycling team, which began as the T-Mobile team in 2003. Three riders joined the team in 2013, American cyclists Carmen Small and Tayler Wiles, and the Canadian Gillian Carleton. Charlotte Becker, Emilia Fahlin, Chloe Hosking, Clara Hughes and Amber Neben left the team in the post-Olympic year.

The 2014 women's road cycling season was the fifth for the Boels–Dolmans Cycling Team, which began as the Dolmans Landscaping Team in 2010. The race was originally scheduled from 26 June to 5 July, but was postponed to mid-September due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy and reduced to 9 stages rather than the originally planned 10.
