The Fiji national rugby league team, nicknamed the Bati, has been participating in international rugby league football since 1992. The team is controlled by the governing body for rugby league in Fiji, Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL), which is currently a member of the Asia-Pacific Rugby League Confederation (APRLC). Fiji have thrice reached the semi-finals of the Rugby League World Cup, in 2008, 2013 and 2017, and are currently ranked 5th in the Rugby League International Federation's World Rankings.

The matches were played at the Port Vila Municipal Stadium in Port Vila, with tournament was played in round-robin format. The draw for the fixtures was held on 1 October 2015 at Port Vila, Vanuatu.

The 2016 OFC U-20 Championship was the 21st edition of the OFC U-20 Championship, the biennial international youth football tournament organized by the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) for players aged 19 and below. This year, the tournament was held in Vanuatu for the first time by itself.
Moses Hedley Toata is Solomon Islander football manager and former player. He manages the Solomon Warriors, a team in the Solomon Islands S-League. For nearly a year Toata managed the Solomon Islands national team before stepping down in July 2016. As a player, Toata made 10 appearances for the national team and scored one goal as a midfielder. At club level, he played for Kossa for his entire career. He has won the Solomon Islands S-League as both a player and a manager.
