Almaty, formerly known as Alma-Ata and Verniy, is the largest city in Kazakhstan, with a population of 2,039,376 people, about 11% of the country's total population, and more than 2.7 million in its built-up area that encompasses Talgar, Boraldai, Otegen Batyr and many other suburbs. It served as capital of the Soviet and later independent Kazakhstan from 1929 to 1997. In 1997, the government relocated the capital to Astana in the north of the country and about 12 hours away by train.
Vladimir Mikhaylovich Smirnov is a Kazakhstani former cross-country skier who raced from the 1982 until 1991 for the USSR and, later, for Kazakhstan. He is the first Olympic champion from independent Kazakhstan. He is also a vice president of the International Biathlon Union. Smirnov is a former member of International Olympic Committee.
The 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification UEFA Group 2 was a UEFA qualifying group for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The group comprised Albania, Denmark, Georgia, Greece, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Ukraine.
The 1997 football (soccer) season was the fifth one in Kazakhstan as an independent nation. The Kazakhstan national football team played a total number of thirteen international matches in 1997 under manager Serik Berdalin, trying to qualify for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.

The Baluan Sholak Sports Palace is a Palace of Sports in Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan. It was built in 1967 and extensively renovated in 2009–2011. It is named after Baluan Sholak, a celebrated Kazakh composer, singer, poet, dombra player, dzhigit and wrestler.
Hossein Tayyebi Bidgoli is an Iranian futsal player. He is a member of Kairat Almaty and the Iran national futsal team, for which he played 130 matches and scored 150 goals. His first match with the national team was in 2009 at the age of 20. He was ranked Top Goalscorer at the 2014 (15) and 2018 AFC Futsal Championship (14), and 5th Best Player in the World at the UMBRO Futsal Awards in 2017 and 2018. His current club, Kairat Almaty, came 2nd in the 2019 Futsal Champions League.

The Kazakhstan Basketball Cup is the national men's professional basketball cup competition in the country of Kazakhstan. It is organised annually over a few days in a single location by the National Basketball Federation Kazakhstan. Its official designation in full is: Basketball Cup of the Republic of Kazakhstan for men's teams Russian: Кубка Республика Казахстан по баскетболу среди мужских команд).
Ayat Rudny Mini-Football Club is a futsal club based in Rudny, a city of Kostanay Province. The club was founded in 1985 and its pavilion is the Gornyak Sportcomplex with capacity of 1,500 seated spectators.
The 2015 Kazakhstan Cup is the 24th season of the Kazakhstan Cup, the annual nationwide football cup competition of Kazakhstan since the independence of the country. The competition began on 29 March 2015 and will end with the final in November 2015. Kairat are the defending champions, having won their first cup in the 2014 competition.
