The 2015 San Angelo Bandits season was the team's third season as a professional indoor football franchise, third as the "San Angelo Bandits", and first as a member of Champions Indoor Football (CIF). [1] The Bandits were led by head coach Wendell Davis.

The Bandits were the 2014 champions of the Lone Star Football League, the last before the LSFL merged with the Champions Professional Indoor Football League and several other teams to form Champions Indoor Football. [2] One of nine teams in the CIF for the 2015 season, the Bandits played their home games at Foster Communications Coliseum in San Angelo, Texas. [3]

Season summary

The Bandits' announced schedule for the 2015 season was affected when the New Mexico Stars abruptly postponed their entry into the league on February 21, just one week before the season began. [4] [5] On March 3, the Albuquerque-based Duke City Gladiators were announced as a late entry into the league, partially replacing the Stars in the CIF schedule with a plan to play 11 games in 2015. [6] The Gladiators simply replaced the Stars on the Bandits' schedule for two home games and one road game. [7]

Just one season after San Angelo won the LSFL championship, the Bandits found themselves in a new league and an unfamiliar position as underdogs. The team lost its first 5 games as a CIF franchise under the leadership of new head coach Joey Longoria. [2] He was replaced as head coach by former Dallas Cowboys player and recently released Texas Revolution head coach Wendell Davis. [8] Longoria was demoted to defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator Gabe Carillo was released. [8] Davis led the Bandits to their first win of the season by defeating the Revolution in San Angelo but decisively lost the next weekend's matchup against the Revolution at the Allen Event Center. [9] [10] This was followed by a home defeat by the Duke City Gladiators, another road loss to Texas, and a home-season ending loss to Duke City. The May 30 road game against the Salina Bombers was cancelled when that team abruptly folded on May 28.

Awards and honors

Each week of the regular season, the CIF names league-wide Players of the Week in offensive, defensive, and special teams categories. For Week 3, the CIF named defensive back Darrelle Charlo as the Defensive Player of the Week. [11] For Week 8, the CIF named kick returner Darrell Harkless as one of two Special Teams Players of the Week. [12]

The Bombers played their home games at the Bicentennial Center in Salina. After the Bombers folded, the Salina Liberty were started as a new indoor football franchise.

The Dodge City Law were a professional indoor football team based in Dodge City, Kansas, with home games at the United Wireless Arena. The team joined the Champions Professional Indoor Football League (CPIFL) in 2013 as an expansion member for the 2014 season. In 2014, the CPIFL merged with the Lone Star Football League (LSFL) to form Champions Indoor Football (CIF). The branding was used again for the 2021 season as a replacement team before an expansion team was granted to the Southwest Kansas Storm for the 2022 season.

The 2015 Amarillo Venom season was the team's twelfth season as a professional indoor football franchise, sixth as the "Amarillo Venom", and first as a member of Champions Indoor Football (CIF). The Venom were led by head coach Julian Reese. The defensive coordinator was Daniel Snyder, receivers coach was John King, assistant coach was Barrett Allen, wide receivers coach was Craig Fulton, special teams coach was Donna Welch, and the trainer was Nathan Johnson.

The 2015 Sioux City Bandits season was the team's sixteenth overall, fifteenth as the Sioux City Bandits and first as a member of Champions Indoor Football (CIF). One of nine teams in the CIF for the inaugural 2015 season, the Bandits finished the regular season with a 9–3 record to earn the number one seed in the playoffs, in which they defeated the Amarillo Venom, 83–52 in the semifinals and beat the Texas Revolution in Champions Bowl I, 76–61.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Champions Bowl I</span> College football game

Champions Bowl I was the inaugural title game of Champions Indoor Football. It was played on June 20, 2015, at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa. The one-seed Sioux City Bandits defeated the two-seed Texas Revolution by a score of 76–61 to earn the Champions Cup.

The 2016 Champions Indoor Football season was the second season of the CIF. It started on Saturday, February 27, when the Omaha Beef traveled to Iowa, losing to the Sioux City Bandits 43-38, and the San Angelo Bandits traveled to Kansas to play the Dodge City Law, a game won by Dodge City, 59-37. The regular season concluded on Sunday, June 5, when the Sioux City Bandits traveled to Illinois to play the Bloomington Edge. The Edge won, 48-38.

Champions Bowl III was the third title game of Champions Indoor Football (CIF). It was played on June 23, 2017, and won by the Texas Revolution.

The 2018 Champions Indoor Football season was the fourth season of the CIF. The regular season began on March 3, when the Wichita Force traveled to Salina Liberty, losing 17–15. The regular season concluded on June 10. This was the second season in which four teams per conference advanced to the Champions Bowl playoffs, with the top seed in each conference hosting their conference's fourth seed, and second seeds hosting third seeds in the first round.

John David Baker is an American football coach who is the co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach for the Ole Miss Rebels football team. Baker played for the Amarillo Venom of the Lone Star Football League (LSFL) and Champions Indoor Football (CIF) from 2014 to 2015.
