The 2017 Big Ten Conference Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the fourth tournament in conference history. It was played between March 16 and March 18, 2017, at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan. [1] As tournament champion Penn State was awarded the Big Ten's automatic bid into the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.
All six Big Ten teams participated in the tournament, which was a single-elimination format. Teams were seeded No. 1 through No. 6 according to the final regular season conference standings. In the quarterfinals, No. 3 played No. 6 and No. 4 played No. 5. In the semifinals, No. 2 played the winner of the first game and No. 1 played the winner of the second game (the teams were not reseeded). The two semifinal winners played each other in the Championship Game.

The Miami RedHawks men's ice hockey team is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college ice hockey program that represents Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio. The RedHawks are a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), starting play in the conference's 2013–14 inaugural season. Prior to the NCHC, from 1980 to 2013, the RedHawks were a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) until the original CCHA disbanded in 2013. They play in Steve "Coach" Cady Arena at the Goggin Ice Center.

Penn State Nittany Lions men's ice hockey, formerly known as the Penn State Icers, is a college ice hockey program that represents the Pennsylvania State University. Prior to the 2012–13 season the program was designated a club sport and competed at the ACHA Division I level. PSU was previously a member of the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL, although the team competed as an independent ACHA D-I member for the 2011–12 season before moving to the NCAA D-I level. They play at the Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pennsylvania.
The 2010–11 Michigan Wolverines men's ice hockey team was the Wolverines' 89th season. They represented the University of Michigan in the 2010–11 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season. The team was coached by Red Berenson and played their home games at Yost Ice Arena, although they took one regular-season home game against archrival Michigan State to Michigan Stadium, drawing the largest crowd in the sport's history. The team earned the 2010–11 Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) regular season championship and advanced to the Frozen Four of the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament. Following the CCHA season, the team announced that they intended to move from the CCHA to the newly formed Big Ten Conference Hockey League in 2013.
