The 2017 Northwest Iran floods were flash floods caused by heavy rains in northwest Iran on April 14, 2017. [1] Flooding was observed in East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan, Kordestan, and Zanjan Provinces. The flood claimed the lives of more than 40 people, and it was deadliest in East Azerbaijan province, where it left 37 dead.
The flood followed after a heavy rain fell for about a day. The rainfall had a maximum total of 47.1 mm in Azarshahr, which was accompanied by 90 km/h wind. [2]
More than 40 people lost their lives in this flood. [3] The majority of casualties were reported from East Azerbaijan province including 17 people who trapped in the flash flood while commuting under a bridge over Seil Chaii in the entrance of Ghallehzar village. While normal traffic to the road was not blocked, cars were commuting through the road next to the flooded river. In a sudden flash flood, 5 cars were driven away by the floodwaters and all 17 passengers inside the cars were killed. [4] The highest casualty incident occurred in Chenar, Ajab Shir where 21 residents were swept away in a flash flood. In the days after the flood, the bodies of 17 victims were recovered. The survivors in Chenar village claimed that there was no flood warning issued. [5]
Azerbaijan or Azarbaijan, also known as Iranian Azerbaijan, is a historical region in northwestern Iran that borders Iraq and Turkey to the west, and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Armenia, and the Republic of Azerbaijan proper to the north.

B Henning demonstrated that Harzandi has many common linguistic features with both Talysh and Zaza and positioned Harzandi between the Talysh and Zaza.
Tractor Cultural Sports Economic Club, commonly known as Tractor, formerly Tractor Sazi, is an Iranian football club based in Tabriz, East Azerbaijan, that competes in the Persian Gulf Pro League. The club was founded in 1970 by the Iran Tractor Manufacturing Company.

From mid-March to April 2019 widespread flash flooding affected large parts of Iran, most severely in Golestan, Fars, Khuzestan, Lorestan, and other provinces. Iran has been hit by three major waves of rain and flooding over the course of two weeks which led to flooding in at least 26 of Iran's 31 provinces and at least 70 people died nationwide as of 6 April, according to the officials. The first wave of rain began on 17 March, leading to flooding in two northern provinces, Golestan and Mazandaran with the former province receiving as much as 70 percent of its average annual rainfall in single day. Several large dams have been overflowed, particularly in Khuzestan and Golestan, therefore many villages and several cities have been evacuated. About 1,900 cities and villages across country have been damaged by severe floods as well as hundreds of millions of dollars of damage to water and agriculture infrastructure. 78 roads were blocked and the reliability of 84 bridges was questioned.

Starting on 21 September 2022, and progressing into 2023, an earthquake swarm occurred in the Iranian province of West Azerbaijan, close to the city of Khoy near the Turkish border. Due to mainly three events, a total of 3,880 buildings were destroyed and 52,301 others were damaged in Khoy, including nearly 1,000 schools. Three people died and over 3,310 others were injured, almost all of them due to panic and only a few from collapsed houses.
On 12 October 2022, Iranian teenager Asra Panahi was killed during the Mahsa Amini protests in the city of Ardabil. She was among a group of students at Shahed Girls High School who are reported to have refused to join a pro-government demonstration and perform the "Salam Farmandeh" song. The students are reported to have been beaten by plainclothes security forces summoned to the school. Panahi died at Fatemi Hospital in Ardabil after sustaining severe injuries.
