The 2017 O'Byrne Cup was played by county and further education college teams of Leinster GAA in January 2017 and was won by Dublin. [1] [2]
16 teams compete: 11 county teams (all those of Leinster except Kilkenny) and 5 third-level teams (DIT, UCD, IT Carlow, DCU–Dóchas Éireann and Maynooth University).
The teams are drawn into 4 groups of 4 teams each. Each team plays the other teams in their group once, earning 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw. The four group winners compete in the semi-finals.

The Leinster GAA Hurling Senior Championship, known simply as the Leinster Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Leinster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in the province of Leinster, and has been contested every year since the 1888 championship.
The O'Byrne Cup is a Gaelic football competition organized by the Leinster GAA and first staged in 1954.
Dublin City University Gaelic Athletic Association Club is the GAA club at Dublin City University. The club fields teams in men's Gaelic football, hurling, ladies' Gaelic football and camogie. It also organises Gaelic handball. The club mainly competes in intervarsity competitions such as the Sigerson Cup, the Fitzgibbon Cup, the O'Connor Cup and the Ashbourne Cup. DCU has also entered competitions organised by the Leinster GAA, including the O'Byrne Cup, the Kehoe Cup and Walsh Cup. In 2016 St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra merged with Dublin City University. As a result some DCU GAA teams, especially reserve teams, compete as DCU St Patrick's or DCU Dóchas Éireann.
The Walsh Cup is an annual hurling competition staged in Ireland by the Leinster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) since 1954. Contested by the top county teams from the provinces of Leinster, Ulster and Connacht, the tournament consists of a round-robin group stage, followed by a knockout stage. Formerly sponsored by Bord na Móna, it was known as the "Bord na Móna Walsh Cup" and is now the "Dioralyte Walsh Cup" since 2024. Prior to 2018, third-level colleges also competed.
The Kehoe Cup is an annual hurling competition organised by the Leinster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) since 1977 for second- and third-tier inter-county teams in the province of Leinster in Ireland. Nowadays, teams from the provinces of Ulster and Connacht are eligible to compete; formerly, teams from third-level institutions within the three provinces also did. The competition runs each January. Formerly sponsored by Bord na Móna, it was formerly known as the "Bord na Móna Kehoe Cup" and is now the "Dioralyte Kehoe Cup" since Dioralyte took over as main sponsor in 2024.
The 2013 O'Byrne Cup is a Gaelic football competition played by the teams of Leinster GAA. The competition differs from the Leinster Senior Football Championship as it also features further education colleges and the winning team does not progress to another tournament at All-Ireland level. The O'Byrne Cup began on 6 January 2013 and was competed on a round robin basis, the top team in each group qualifying for the semi-finals. Kildare were the winners.

The 2017 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 130th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 23 April 2017 and ended on 3 September 2017. The draw for the championship was held on 13 October 2016 and was broadcast live on RTÉ2.
