Andreescu became the first wildcard to win the title in the tournament's history and the youngest Indian Wells champion since Serena Williams in 1999. This also marked the second year in a row where a player won the tournament without having won a WTA singles title prior.

Ashleigh Barty defeated Karolína Plíšková in the final, 7–6(7–1), 6–3, to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2019 Miami Open. It marked Barty's first Miami Open title and her first WTA Premier Mandatory title. Her victory earned her a top 10 debut in the WTA rankings.

Caroline Wozniacki was the defending champion, but lost in the third round to Aryna Sabalenka in a rematch of the previous year's final.
