The 2020 Aotearoa Music Awards was the 55th holding of the annual ceremony, renamed the Aotearoa Music Awards featuring awards for musical recording artists based in or originating from New Zealand. It took place on 15 November 2020 at Spark Arena in Auckland and was hosted by Jesse Mulligan, Sharyn Casey, and Jayden King. The awards show was broadcast live nationally on The Edge TV from 7pm until 8:30pm, and Three from 8:30pm until 10:30pm. [1]

Benee initially gained local prominence with her singles "Glitter" and "Soaked", before her 2019 single "Supalonely" saw international popularity following its success on the video-sharing platform TikTok and YouTube. "Glitter" is a song by the New Zealand musician Benee. It was released as a single on 3 July 2019 as the fourth and final single from Benee's debut extended play Fire on Marzz. The song peaked at number 7 on the New Zealand singles chart and has been certified gold. The song went viral on TikTok in November 2019.

"Supalonely" is a song by New Zealand singer Benee featuring American singer Gus Dapperton, released through Republic Records on 6 December 2019 as the third and final single from her second extended play Stella & Steve (2019). It also appears on Benee's debut studio album, Hey U X (2020). The song gained immense popularity on the online video-sharing platform TikTok in March 2020, gaining more than 6.9 billion plays for the month. It peaked on the top 40 in over 25 countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, The Netherlands and New Zealand, earning a gold certification in its second week in the latter.

Muroki Mbote Wa Githinji, known mononymously as Muroki, is a Kenyan-New Zealand reggae musician. A member of the bands Cloak Bay and Masaya, Muroki debuted as a solo musician in 2019. In 2021, Muroki's song "Wavy" became a hit single in New Zealand.

Maimoa is a New Zealand musical group. Formed from current and former presenters from the Māori Television show Pūkana, the group debuted in 2016 with the single "Maimoatia", which was released to celebrate te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Since their debut, the group has continued to release pop singles sung in te Reo Māori, including "Wairua" (2017), a viral hit produced by members of the New Zealand band Sons of Zion.

Foley are a pop music duo from Auckland, New Zealand. The duo is composed of multi-instrumentalists, songwriters and vocalists Ash Wallace and Gabriel Everett. Foley have been nominated for two Aotearoa Music Awards alongside an APRA Silver Scroll Award. The band has toured with Remi Wolf, and played shows with Tove Lo, Still Woozy, BENEE, Two Door Cinema Club, Flight Facilities.

Bronson Price, known professionally as Melodownz, is a New Zealand MC, rapper and urban poet from Avondale, Auckland. Debuting in 2013, Melodownz has released solo projects including Beginners Luck (2014), Avontales (2017) and Melo & Blues (2018), as well as collaborative extended plays with Angelo King, IllBaz and Raiza Biza.
