The Moghbazar explosion took place on 27 June 2021 at the wireless gate of Moghbazar in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. At least 7 people were killed and more than 100 injured, out of which 66 were admitted to various hospitals. Police suspect the incident was caused by frozen gas. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

Casualties and damage

Hundreds of people were injured in the blast. 6 people were killed. Among the injured, about 66 people are undergoing treatment at the hospital. Most of the injured were from nearby buildings, a few bus passengers and pedestrians.

The three-storey old building on 79 Outer Circular Road on the Mouchak-Magbazar road has partially collapsed. Sounds and blast waves caused by the blast damaged 14 nearby multi-storey buildings. 12 of the buildings are commercial and 2 are residential. In one building was the office of the online news portal 'Aparajey Bangla'. The damaged buildings are: building no. 79 on Outer Circular Road, Rashmono Specialized Hospital, Nazrul School, Arang Showroom, Bishal Center, Dom-Ino Commercial, Best Buy Showroom, Bengal Trades Center, Calcutta Dry Cleaners, Moghbazar Plaza, Hamdard Medical and Sales Center and the Vision Emporium Showroom. A gas explosion is the ignition of a mixture of air and flammable gas, typically from a gas leak. In household accidents, the principal explosive gases are those used for heating or cooking purposes such as natural gas, methane, propane, butane. In industrial explosions many other gases, like hydrogen, as well as evaporated (gaseous) gasoline or ethanol play an important role. On 17 August 2005, around 500 bomb explosions occurred at 300 locations in 63 out of the 64 districts of Bangladesh. The bombs exploded within a half-hour period starting from 11:30 am. A terrorist organization, Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) claimed responsibility for the bombings. The group, led by Shaykh Abdur Rahman and Siddiqur Rahman. Another terrorist group, named Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami, was associated with JMB in executing the co-ordinated attack. Following the bombings, both groups were banned by the BNP Government of Bangladesh.

The attack was carried out at 5:22 pm after Sheikh Hasina, the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. The attacks targeted Awami League president Sheikh Hasina. Hasina was injured in the attack.The involvement of BNP-Jamaat led government is still debated to this date.

The 2010 Connecticut power plant explosion occurred at the Kleen Energy Systems power station in Middletown, Connecticut, United States at 11:17 am EST on February 7, 2010. The plant had been under construction from September 2007, and was scheduled to start supplying energy in June 2010. The initial blast killed five and injured at least fifty; one of the injured later died in hospital, bringing the total death toll to six.

On 2 October 2014, an explosion occurred in a house in the Khagragarh locality of Burdwan. Two terrorists were killed and a third injured. The police seized 55 improvised explosive devices, RDX, wrist watch dials and SIM cards.

The 2017 South Surma Upazila bombings was a combined police and army raid of a suspected militant hideout in South Surma Upazila, Sylhet, Bangladesh on 25 March 2017. During the raid, the militants targeted the Bangladesh Armed Forces who were surrounding the militant occupied compound in Sylhet. There were two suicide bombings which killed four civilians and two police officers and wounded more than 40, some critically. An army lieutenant colonel later died from his injuries. Bombs exploded and gunfire was reported when the military launched Operation Twilight to clear the militant hideout. ISIL claimed responsibility however, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal denied the claims of ISIL and blamed the local Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh for the attacks. Finally the Bangladesh Army neutralised four militants at the suspected hideout.

2005 November Bangladesh court bombing was a simultaneous suicide bombing of courts in Chittagong and Gazipur in Bangladesh carried out by Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh on 29 November 2005 that killed 8 people and injured over 100.

Shahudul Haque is a former Inspector General of Police of Bangladesh Police during 2003–2004. Earlier, he was an Army officer who later join Bangladesh Police.

On 20 February 2019, a fire broke out in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The fire started in a road accident between a pickup van and a private car. After the collision, the car's gas cylinder exploded. The fire then spread to a group of buildings being used to store chemicals, and quickly expanded to nearby buildings in the densely packed historic district of Chowk Bazaar in Old Dhaka. The fire left at least 80 people dead and 50 others injured.

On 18 December 2021, an explosion at a bank branch in the Sher Shah area of Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan, killed 17 people and injured at least 16 others.

On 10 December 2022, an explosion destroyed a block of flats in St Helier, Jersey in the Channel Islands. Ten people were killed in the suspected gas explosion, which occurred just before 4 a.m. GMT.

The Boksburg explosion took place on 24 December 2022, when a fuel tanker carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exploded underneath a railway bridge in Boksburg, in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng, South Africa, with a death toll of 41 people as of 18 January 2023. Nearby infrastructure was damaged by the explosion.

On 7 March 2023, an explosion happened in a market in Dhaka, Bangladesh killing at least 17 people while more than 140 were injured. The explosion took place at around 5:00 p.m local time in a busy market building in Siddiq Bazaar in Old Dhaka.
