The 2021 Special Honours in New Zealand were Special Honours List, published in New Zealand on 9 August [1] , 28 September 2021 [2] and 21 December 2021 [3] .

Appointments were made to the New Zealand Order of Merit and the Queen's Service Order to incoming governor-general, Dame Cindy Kiro, and the outgoing vice-regal consort, Sir David Gascoigne. There was also a redesignation for the writer Vincent O'Sullivan from a Distinguished Companion to Knight Companion in New Zealand Order of Merit.

New Zealand Order of Merit A royal order of merit in New Zealand

The New Zealand Order of Merit is an order of merit in the New Zealand royal honours system. It was established by royal warrant on 30 May 1996 by Elizabeth II, Queen of New Zealand, "for those persons who in any field of endeavour, have rendered meritorious service to the Crown and nation or who have become distinguished by their eminence, talents, contributions or other merits", to recognise outstanding service to the Crown and people of New Zealand in a civil or military capacity.

Queens Service Order Order awarded by the monarch of New Zealand

The Queen's Service Order, established by royal warrant of Queen Elizabeth II on 13 March 1975, is used to recognise "valuable voluntary service to the community or meritorious and faithful services to the Crown or similar services within the public sector, whether in elected or appointed office". This order was created after a review of New Zealand's honours system in 1974. The Queen's Service Order replaced the Imperial Service Order in New Zealand.

Lois Muir

Dame Lois Joan Muir is a New Zealand netball coach and administrator, and a former representative netball and basketball player. Muir represented New Zealand in two sports, playing with the Tall Ferns from 1952 to 1962 and the Silver Ferns from 1960 to 1963. She later became head coach of the Silver Ferns for 15 years from 1974 to 1988.

Sir Noel Crossley Anderson was a New Zealand judge who was President of the Court of Appeal of New Zealand from 2004 to 2006, before being elevated to the Supreme Court. He left office in 2008.

Dame Mary Josephine Drayton, known as Joy Drayton, was a New Zealand teacher, academic and officeholder.

Dame Alcyion Cynthia Kiro is a New Zealand public health academic, administrator, and advocate, who has served as the 22nd Governor-General of New Zealand since 21 October 2021. Kiro is the first Māori woman, the third person of Māori descent, and the fourth woman to hold the office.

David Gascoigne New Zealand lawyer and statesman

Sir David Rendel Kingston Gascoigne is a New Zealand lawyer and former judicial conduct commissioner. He is the husband of Dame Patsy Reddy, who served as the 21st governor-general of New Zealand from 2016 to 2021.

Dame Helen Diana Winkelmann is the 13th and current Chief Justice of New Zealand, having been sworn in on 14 March 2019. She is the second woman to hold the position, following her immediate predecessor, Sian Elias.

June Mariu New Zealand Māori community leader and sportswoman

Dame Mabel June Hinekahukura Mariu is a New Zealand Māori community leader, teacher and former sportswoman. June is of Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, Ngāti Porou and Pākehā descent. She has represented Aotearoa / New Zealand in two sporting codes. Netball as the first Māori captain of the National Side in 1960, and indoor basketball. June has also represented in softball regionally for Auckland and North Island teams. Dame June was inducted into the Māori Sports Awards Hall of Fame in February 2014. Between 1987 and 1990, she served as national president of the Māori Women's Welfare League. June was appointed a member of the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission in 2000 by the late Hon. Parekura Horomia.

Dame Alison Mary Roxburgh was a New Zealand women's rights advocate and community leader.
