The 2021 Vuelta a Murcia was the 41st edition of the Vuelta a Murcia road cycling race. It was held on 23 May 2021 in the titular region of southeastern Spain as a category 1.1 event on the 2021 UCI Europe Tour calendar. [1] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the race was postponed from mid-February to late May. [2] As a result, the race reverted to the one-day nature it had previously held before 2019. [3]
The 192.4-kilometre (119.6 mi) long race started in Los Alcázares and finished in Alcantarilla. [3] [4] It was won by Alcantarilla-born Antonio Jesús Soto (Euskaltel–Euskadi), who was part of the race's initial breakaway. During the rain-soaked race, Soto dropped his breakaway companions on the last climb and soloed to victory, his first ever as a professional. The chasing bunch finished just over half a minute after Soto, with Ángel Madrazo (Burgos BH) winning the sprint for second ahead of Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar Team), who rounded out the podium. Three UCI WorldTeams, seven UCI ProTeams, and five UCI Continental teams made up the fifteen teams that participated in the race. Nine teams each fielded seven riders, which was the maximum allowed, while six teams each fielded six; these six teams were Bahrain Cycling Academy, Electro Hiper Europa, Equipo Kern Pharma, Gazprom–RusVelo, Rally Cycling, and UAE Team Emirates. Of the 100 riders to start the race, only 46 finished, with a further 17 riders finishing over the time limit. [7] [8]

Samuel "Samu" Sánchez González is a Spanish former professional road bicycle racer, who rode professionally in the sport between 2000 and 2017 for the Euskaltel–Euskadi and BMC Racing Team squads. He was the gold medal winner in the road race at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In the following years Sánchez proved himself in hilly classics and stage races as one of the most important riders in the peloton. He was also known as one of the best descenders in the peloton. He finished in the top 6 of the Tour de France three times and in the top 10 of the Vuelta a España 6 times. Other notable achievements include winning the Vuelta a Burgos in 2010, the 2012 Tour of the Basque Country and five stages of the Vuelta a España.
Igor Antón Hernández is a Spanish former professional road bicycle racer, who rode professionally between 2005 and 2018 for the Euskaltel–Euskadi, Movistar Team and Team Dimension Data squads.
The Vuelta Ciclista a Murcia is a road bicycle race held in and around Murcia, Spain. The first four editions were reserved to amateurs. Originally the race was held in early March and consisted of five stages. However, due to Spain's financial turmoil, the race was scaled back to three stages in 2011 and two stages in 2012. From 2013 to 2018 the Vuelta a Murcia was organised as a single-day race and shifted to mid-February on the international calendar. In 2019 the race was expanded to two stages. It is part of the UCI Europe Tour as a 2.1 event. However, due to the postponement of the 2021 edition to May, the race was reverted to its one-day nature, with the expectation that the race will continue as a two-day event in future editions.
