The 2022 Saudi Cup was a horse race that took place at King Abdulaziz Racetrack in Riyadh on 26 February 2022. It was the third running of the race, and the first after it was promoted to Group 1 status. The total prize money for the race was $20 million, with the winner receiving $10 million, making it the world's most valuable horse race at the time of running. [1] [2] [3]
The race was won by outsider Emblem Road, ridden by Panamanian jockey Wigberto Ramos and trained locally in Saudi Arabia by Mitab Almulawah. [4] [5]
A maximum field of 14 runners was declared for the race, including 2021 Saudi Cup winner Mishriff. Other notable entries included Kentucky Derby winner Mandaloun, Champions Cup winner T O Keynes, Woodward Stakes winner Art Collector, Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Marche Lorraine, and Champion Stakes winner Sealiway. Opera House was a British thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a racing career which lasted from October 1990 until November 1993 he ran eighteen times and won eight races. Opera House was best known for his performances as a five-year-old in 1993, when he won three Group One races, including the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and was named European Champion Older Horse. Retired to stud in Japan, he developed into a top-class sire in the country, supplying seven-time Grade 1 hero T M Opera O, four-time Group 1 winner Meisho Samson and multiple Group scorer Miyabi Ranveli.
William Buick is a Norwegian-British flat jockey. He shared the champion apprentice jockey title in 2008 with David Probert and won the Lester Award for Apprentice Jockey of the Year in 2007 and 2008. From 2010 to 2014 he was stable jockey to John Gosden. In 2015 he signed with Godolphin. Buick won his first Group1 race in Canada in 2010 and since then has won Group 1 races in England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and the United States. He has won four British Classic Races: the St Leger in 2010, 2011 and 2021 and the Derby in 2018.

Benbatl is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He was unraced as a two-year-old in 2016 but in the following year he won the Hampton Court Stakes and was placed in both the Craven Stakes and the Dante Stakes as well as finishing fifth in the Epsom Derby. In 2019 he secured the first of two victories in the Joel Stakes. He won the Singspiel Stakes for a second time in 2020, and the Joel Stakes for a second time in 2021. At the end of the 2021 season he was retired to stud.

After showing some promise when winning one minor race as a two-year-old in 2019 he emerged as a top-class middle-distance performer in the following year, recording victories in the Newmarket Stakes, Prix du Jockey Club and Prix Guillaume d'Ornano. In the spring of 2021 he was campaigned internationally and won the second running of the Saudi Cup on dirt and the Dubai Sheema Classic on turf. On returning to Europe he was placed in both the Eclipse Stakes and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes before winning the International Stakes. As of August 2022 he has earned the equivalent of over £11 million pounds in prize money.
Mandaloun is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse who finished second behind Medina Spirit in the 2021 Kentucky Derby followed by winning both the Pegasus Stakes and Haskell Stakes. He also won the 2021 Risen Star Stakes, and the 2022 Louisiana Stakes.
