In 2023, local government by-elections were held across New Brunswick fill mayoral and town council vacancies.

Contents

The by-elections for wards 2 and 3 of Valley Waters were held on 13 February, while the remainder of the by-elections were held on 23 October.

Valley Waters

By-elections were held in Valley Waters to elect one councillor for Ward 2 and one councillor for Ward 3. This was done because of a change in the allocation of council seats.

Previously, Ward 2 was allocated one councillor, but was now allocated two, creating a vacant seat. Ward 3 used to have two council seats, but this was reduced to one. However, since no candidates put their names forward in Ward 3 in 2022, it still had one vacant seat. [1]

Beaurivage

By-elections were held in Beaurivage to elect one councillor at large and one councillor for Ward 4, following the resignations of Dennis Mazerolle [2] and Joanne Robichaud, [3] respectively.

There was also a by-election in Ward 2 as no candidates stood for election to that seat in 2022. [4]

Campobello Island

A by-election was held to elect a new councillor for Ward 2 of Campobello Island following the resignation of Elizabeth Greenier-Butler. [5] [6] However, no candidates stood for election and the seat remained vacant.

By-elections were held in Hanwell to elect two one councillor at large, one councillor for Ward 4, and one councillor for Ward 5, following the resignations of Pat Septon, [11] Morgan MacPherson, [12] [13] and Debby Peck, [14] respectively.

A local service district (LSD) was a provincial administrative unit for the provision of local services in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. LSDs originally covered areas of the province that maintained some services but were not made municipalities when the province's former county municipalities were dissolved at the start of 1967; eventually all of rural New Brunswick was covered by the LSD system. They were defined in law by the Local Service Districts Regulation of the Municipalities Act. In 2017, the Municipalities Act was replaced by the Local Governance Act, which continued the Local Service Districts Regulation.

Hanwell is an incorporated rural community and former local service district within Kingsclear Parish in York County, New Brunswick, Canada. It is located on Route 640 immediately southwest of Fredericton.

Réjean Savoie is a businessman and political figure in New Brunswick. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1999 to 2003 and again from 2022 to 2024. He was most recently elected the Progressive Conservative Party MLA for Miramichi Bay-Neguac in 2022 in a by-election to replace Lisa Harris, having previously represented Miramichi Bay from 1999 to 2003.
