Background

After the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections of 2017, the city was divided into 41 administrative wards, electing a total of 162 corporators, with each ward returning four members. As per the latest ward formation and reservation draft notification issued by the Government of Maharashtra, the PMC has now been restructured into 58 wards, increasing the total number of corporators to 174. Of these, 87 seats are reserved for women. Within the women's quota, 11 seats are reserved for women belonging to Scheduled Castes and 9 seats for women belonging to Other Backward Classes, while the remaining women's seats fall under the general category. Overall, 22 seats are reserved for Scheduled Castes and 17 seats for Other Backward Classes, with the remaining seats classified under the open category. This restructuring has been carried out in accordance with population growth and revised electoral norms and will come into effect for the next general municipal elections. [3] [4]
