The 40th Ohio Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. [1] [2]

Service

The 40th Ohio Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio September through November 1861 [3] and mustered in for three years service on December 7, 1861, [4] under the command of Colonel Jonathan Cranor. [5]

The regiment was attached to 18th Brigade, Army of the Ohio, to March 1862. Unattached, Army of the Ohio to August 1862. District of Eastern Kentucky, Department of the Ohio, to October 1862. District of the Kanawha, West Virginia, Department of the Ohio, to February 1863. 2nd Brigade, Baird's Division, Army of Kentucky, Department of the Cumberland, to June 1863. 1st Brigade, 1st Division, Reserve Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to October 1863. 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, IV Corps, Army of the Cumberland, October 1863. 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, IV Corps, to December 1864. Companies A, B, C, and D mustered out of service at Pilot Knob, Georgia, on October 7, 1864. The remainder of the regiment mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, on December 10, 1864, with veterans and recruits being transferred to the 51st Ohio Infantry. [4] [1] [2]

The regiment lost a total of 237 men during service; 6 officers and 96 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, 1 officer and 134 enlisted men died of disease.

After being converted to mounted infantry, the regiment served in the Tullahoma campaign and at Chickamauga. On October 15, 1863, the unit was renamed the 8th Indiana Cavalry and took part in Rousseau's Opelika Raid, and fought at Brown's Mill and Lovejoy's Station in the Atlanta campaign. The regiment served in Sherman's March to the Sea and the Carolinas campaign before being mustered out of service on July 20, 1865.
