5th Battalion Tactical Group is a Battalion tactical group of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces and is subordinated to 81st Aeromobile Brigade of the Air Assault Forces. It was established in 2015 as a combined arms warfare unit and since then, has taken part in multiple engagements. It is garrisoned at Talakivka in Poltava Oblast.
On December 31, 2014, the directive for establishment of the battalion at Kremenchuk was signed [1] and it was supposed to be headquartered at the base of 107th Rocket Artillery Regiment, but due to space unavailability the plan was ultimately changed in favor of establishing a new base at Zhytomyr. [2]
Its establishment started at the 37th combined military training ground near Zhytomyr in March 2015 [1] and the unit received personnel, equipment and weapons, and additional training was carried out till June 2015. [1] Many volunteers, including the famous writer, Oleg Anatoliyovych Chuyko also volunteered as a part of the battalion and Oleg Anatoliyovych Chuyko became the battalion's first commander. [3] [4]
On June 12, 2015, after complete preparation it was deployed to ATO zone [5] especially at the city of Mykolaivka in Donetsk Oblast. [1] It became a part of the 81st Aeromobile Brigade on 16 June 2015. [5]
In January 2019, the battalion was deployed from Mykolaivka to Terentiivka. [6]
In March 2022, the battalion was deployed to Zaporizhzhia Oblast where since then, it has been actively taking part in the Battle of Huliaipole. [7]
The 95th Separate Polesian Air Assault Brigade is a unit of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces. The brigade is located in Zhytomyr. It is considered one of the most prestigious and capable units in the Ukrainian military. The brigade is one of Ukraine's Partnership for Peace units. The 80th Separate Galician Air Assault Brigade is an airmobile formation of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces. The brigade traces its history back to the 80th Airborne Regiment of the Soviet Union, formed in 1955 as part of the Soviet airborne's 7th Guards Airborne Division. Four years later, the regiment transferred to the 104th Guards Airborne Division. It participated in Operation Whirlwind in 1956 and Operation Danube in 1968. In 1979, the regiment was disbanded and used to form the 39th and 40th Separate Air Assault Brigades of the Soviet Army. The 39th Separate Air Assault Brigade became the 224th Training Center after transfer back to the Soviet airborne in 1990. The training center was taken over by Ukraine in 1992 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and became the 6th Separate Airmobile Brigade in 1995. In 1999, the brigade was reorganized into the 80th Airmobile Regiment, part of the 13th Army Corps. In 2013, the regiment was upgraded and became a brigade. The brigade fought in the War in Donbass, and was redesignated as an air assault brigade in 2015.
