The 6th of October War Panorama is a museum and memorial to the 1973 October war, located in Heliopolis, Cairo. [1] Constructed over an area of 7.5 feddans (around 32,000 square metres), [2] it was inaugurated on 5 October 1989 by former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. It was built as a cylindrical fort-like building molded in Islamic architectural style [2] with partial assistance from a group of North Korean architects and is run by the Egyptian National Military Museums Department.

The visitors are directed to a waiting area until the Panorama is open. The waiting area is an outdoor area with food kiosks and vendors which sell souvenirs. [3]

The spacious outdoors display area lies across from the Panorama building. In it are shown military vehicles that were used in the war. These include tanks, aircraft and weaponry that belonged to both Egypt and Israel. The panorama itself also contains many weapons, models and reliefs showing the course of war. [2]

First hall

The show, a 15-minute documentary on the war [4] [5] starts in the first hall. The film was made in the 1990s. Narration is in 11 languages. [6]

Second hall

Visitors sit on a rotating platform to view a 360 degree war film featuring Egyptian soldiers storming the Bar-Lev Line on the Suez Canal, [7] which is documented on a huge mural. There are also 3D figures on the wall while a narrator describes the war. The narration is in Arabic only. [8]

A cyclorama is a panoramic image on the inside of a cylindrical platform, designed to give viewers standing in the middle of the cylinder a 360° view, and also a building designed to show a panoramic image. The intended effect is to make viewers, surrounded by the panoramic image, feel as if they were standing in the midst of the place depicted in the image.

6th of October is a satellite city of Giza, Egypt, and part of the Greater Cairo metropolitan area. It had a population of 450,000 in the 2017 census.

Admiral Fouad Mohamed Abou Zikry was a career military man, rising in the ranks of the Egyptian military, and then the ministry of defense, ending his career where he witnessed two wars as a presidential advisor. Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Navy and Vice Defense Minister from 12 February 1972 to October 29, 1973. He later served as an Advisor of Naval Affairs to the President of the Republic of Egypt, Deputy Minister of Maritime Transport, Chairman of Federal Arab Maritime Company (FAMCO). He remains the only Egyptian Navy officer to have held the ranks of both Admiral and Field Marshal in the history of the Egyptian Armed Forces.

The Unknown Soldier Memorial in Cairo is a pyramid-shaped monument in Nasr City. Its construction was ordered by president Anwar Sadat in 1974 in honor of Egyptians and Arabs who lost their lives in the 1973 October War. It was inaugurated in October 1975. The site was also chosen for the president's tomb after his assassination in October 1981.

Ahmed Hamdi was an Egyptian engineer and a general of the 3rd Army of Egypt during the Yom Kippur War. He was killed while crossing the Suez Canal with his soldiers and was awarded the Sinai star posthumously.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Abdul Meniem Al-Toras</span>

Abdul Meniem Al-Toras is the former Commander of the Egyptian Air Defense Command. He graduated from the Air Defense college in 1972, and saw action in the Yom Kippur War. He is the first commander-in-chief of the Egyptian Air Defense Forces who graduated from the Air Defense College and was commissioned in the Air Defense Forces as a separated military branch. All previous commanders-in-chief were graduates of the Army academy and were commissioned in Army units, in fact many of them were commissioned in non-AD units like Armour, Artillery, Infantry, and Signals. He held most of the notable commands in the Egyptian Air Defense. On 14 August 2012 President Mohamed Morsi Appointed him as the new Commander in Chief of the Egyptian Air Defence command after he dismissed Lt. General Abd El Aziz Seif-Eldeen. He is a member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which was reorganized in September 2012.

Sheikh Mubarak Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was a member of the House of Sabah and one of the first Kuwaitis to attain the military rank of lieutenant general. He was one of the first Kuwaitis to be commissioned as an officer by the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, UK, and the first Kuwaiti to receive an Amiri Decree for appointment as Chief of the General Staff. Mohamed Atef Anwar Sadat was a fighter pilot in the Egyptian Air Force who had the rank of flight lieutenant. In the Yom Kippur War, he and colleagues were killed in a raid on an Israeli military airport. He is the younger stepbrother of former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, who was assassinated on the same day eight years later.
