The 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band, is a grade 1 competitive pipe band from Campbellville, Ontario, Canada.
The band was formed in 1982 by members of the disbanded General Motors Pipe Band [1] with support from a 78th Fraser Highlanders re-enactment group, but the band was allowed to keep the name after support from the group ceased. [2]
The 78th Frasers became the first non-Scottish band to win the World Pipe Band Championships, in the summer of 1987, breaking the Strathclyde Police Pipe Band's (now the Greater Glasgow Police Scotland Pipe Band) run of six consecutive wins. [3] [4]
Founding pipe major Bill Livingstone is the only person in history to lead a Grade 1 band to a World Championship and win a Clasp for piobaireachd (Pibroch) at the Northern Meeting, the two pinnacles of competitive success in the piping world. Livingstone stepped down from the role in 2010 after 29 years; [5] he detailed the acrimonious circumstances around his departure in his 2017 memoir Preposterous. [6]
The band has performed twice at the Pre-Worlds concert, at the inaugural 1994 concert and again in 2003.
Livingstone's successor, Doug MacRae, led the band from 2010-2023. Under MacRae’s leadership, the band won several North American Championship titles and continued its unbroken record since 1984 of attendance at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow. [7]
The band is currently led by pipe major Michael Grey and drum sergeant Drew Duthart. [3] The band has won both the North American Pipe Band Championships (held in Maxville, Ontario) and the Canadian Pipe Band Championships (held in Cambridge, Ontario) a total of twelve times each. [3] 'The Frasers' travel to Scotland each summer to compete at the World Championships, and have finished in the prize list eleven times.
The band wears the 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band tartan, designed for the band in 1998. [8]
They have recorded eight albums, all of which have been released by the Glasgow label Lismor Recordings.
In September 2017, Sean Allan was made the new bass drummer, replacing long-time member Johnny Rowe, who was dismissed on August 28 after 14 competitive seasons.
Allan joined his brother-in-law, Lead-Drummer Drew Duthart. Allan followed in the footsteps of his late father, Luke Allan, who played with the band during its most successful years in the 1980s and, coincidentally, left the 78th Frasers to play with the Toronto Police with his son-in-law, Drew Duthart, who was then the lead-drummer.
As of January 2018, the band made another change at bass drum, with Sean Allan leaving before playing in a competition. Pipe-Major Doug MacRae confirmed that Allan had left and that Christina Hanks was the band’s new bass drummer. The band made yet another change after the 2018 season, replacing Hanks with Colin McKail, previously of Hamilton Police. In April of 2022, Colin McKail was removed as the band’s bass drummer and replaced with Brian Morgan of New Hampshire. [10]
Glasgow Police Pipe Band was a grade one pipe band from Glasgow, Scotland. Founded in 1883 as the Burgh of Govan Police Pipe Band, the band enjoyed its greatest competitive success as the Strathclyde Police Pipe Band. It ceased competing as Glasgow Police Pipe Band in 2021.
The Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band is a grade 1 pipe band from Shotts, in the North Lanarkshire region of Scotland. The band has won the World Pipe Band Championships sixteen times. The current pipe major is Emmett Conway.

Muirhead and Sons Pipe Band was a pipe band based in Grangemouth, Scotland. The band was highly successful, winning the World Pipe Band Championships a total of eight times. This total has been surpassed only by Strathclyde Police, Shotts and Dykehead, and Field Marshal Montgomery pipe bands who held the title twenty-one, fifteen, and thirteen times respectively, and equalled by the Clan MacRae Society Pipe Band which also won eight times.
Donald Shaw Ramsay was a Scottish bagpiper. Qualified as a pipe major in the British Army, he led the Edinburgh City Police Pipe Band to victory at the World Championships twice and was also leader of the all-star Invergordon Distillery Pipe Band during its four years of existence.
