The 7th Infantry Division is a formation of the Bangladesh Army. It's located in Lebukhali of Patuakhali District. This is the first Bangladesh Army formation in the Barisal Division. It was formed as part of the development vision of Bangladesh Armed Forces Forces Goal 2030. This project will have an estimated cost of Tk. 16.99 billion and will be implemented by Ministry of Defence. [1] [2]

Construction

Barisal Division had no army installment and had to rely on 55 Infantry Divisions. To ensure security and the capability of Army in the country's southern area the decision was made to set up a new infantry division and cantonment in Lebukhali in 2016 as part of the Forces Goal 2030. [3]

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), on 14 November 2017, approved the project. [1] On 8 February 2018 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated Sheikh Hasina Cantonment and hoisted the flag of the 7th Infantry Division headquarters. [4]

Formation

A total of 15,512 posts and 33 military units will be created in 11 phases under the new infantry division. Current General Officer Commanding of the division is Major General Abdul Qayoom Mollah, ndc, psc. Currently there are only 11 unit in this division. [5]

The Bangladesh Army is the land warfare branch and the largest component of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. The primary mission of the Army is to defend the land of Bangladesh from any external attack. Control of personnel and operations is administered by the Army Headquarters, Dhaka Cantonment. The Bangladesh Army is also constitutionally obligated to assist the government, during times of domestic national emergency e.g. the army helps people during any natural calamity. General elections were held in Bangladesh on 29 December 2008. The two main parties in the election were the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Khaleda Zia, and the Bangladesh Awami League Party, led by Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Awami League Party formed a fourteen-party Grand Alliance including Ershad's Jatiya Party, while the BNP formed a four-party alliance which included the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami. Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan SBP (BAR), psc is a retired Bangladeshi army officer who served as the Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army from 2012 to 2015. He took office of Army Chief at 25 June 2012 and retired on 25 June 2015. He joined Bangladesh Military Academy on 19 March 1976 and was commissioned on 30 November 1976 in the Infantry Regiment. Iqbal had a diversified and fine mix of all three types of appointment available in army. During his 39 years of service in the Bangladesh Army, He commanded three infantry battalions, an infantry brigade and three divisions. He also served as chief of general staff, colonel staff of a division, and platoon commander of the Bangladesh Military Academy. He participated in Operation Desert Storm and received 'Liberation of Kuwait Medal'.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Forces Goal 2030</span> Military modernisation program

Forces Goal 2030 is a military modernization program which began in 2009 and was revised in 2017. It was designed to enhance the capabilities of three service branches of Bangladesh Armed Forces: the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. The primary focus of the modernization program is the reformation of the military organization, expansion of the forces, the transformation of the indigenous defense sector to support research and manufacturing, and acquisition of modern military weapons. The requirement for modernization was realized in the aftermath of 2008 Bangladesh–Myanmar naval standoff later resulting in Bangladesh's favour. One of the primary objectives of the modernization program is to develop a three-dimensional force capable of conducting multi-platform warfare.

BNS Sher-e-Bangla is the first all service naval base being developed for the Bangladesh Navy at Rabnabad, Patuakhali. With an area of 700 acres. this is the largest naval base of the Bangladesh Navy. Of that area, 300 acres of land have been developed for naval base and 400 acres is devoted for naval aviation and submarine operations. It is named after the 1st Prime Minister of Bengal, A. K. Fazlul Huq, who was known as Sher-e-Bangla or the Tiger of Bengal.

Earlier, he was the Commandant of National Defence College, Bangladesh. He served as the Quarter Master General (QMG) of the Bangladesh Army in Army Headquarters. He was one of the former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI). He also served as general officer commanding (GOC), 11 Infantry Division and Area Commander, Bogura Area.

General Waker-Uz-Zaman, OSP SGP psc born 16 September 1966 is a four star general of the Bangladesh Army who is the current Chief of Army Staff (CAS) of the Bangladesh Army since 23 June 2024. Prior to his appointment as CAS, he served as the Chief of General Staff (CGS) of the Bangladesh Army. Previously, he served as the 15th Principal Staff Officer of Armed Forces Division. On 28 February 2023, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the newly built cantonment. The Abdul Hamid Cantonment is built on 275 acres of land beside the Ghorauta River.
