The 8th Congress of the Ak Zhol Democratic Party was held on 2 July 2011 in Astana. Azat Peruashev was unanimously elected by the 137 delegates to be the new party's chairman, succeeding Alikhan Baimenov who had previously held the post since 2005.

Background

By a presidential decree of 1 July 2011, the Incumbent Chairman Alikhan Baimenov of Ak Zhol was appointed as a Chairman of the Agency for Civil Service Affairs of Kazakhstan, opening a new seat for the leadership for the party. [1]

Procedure

On 2 July, an 8th Congress was held to elect the new chairman of the party. Azat Peruashev, who a day earlier left the ranks of the ruling party of the Nur Otan, joined Ak Zhol and was endorsed by Baimenov to succeeded him. [2] With the 137 delegates participating in the convention, Peruashev was unanimously voted to be the new chairman. [3]

Presidential elections were held in Kazakhstan on 4 December 2005. Incumbent president Nursultan Nazarbayev, in power since 1989, sought and won a 3rd term against four other candidates. Opposition candidates were allowed some access to the mass media, but this was still restricted. According to western election observers, opposition candidates also suffered considerable harassment. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) criticized the elections, calling them unfair, but noted improvements.

Snap presidential elections were held in Kazakhstan on 26 April 2015 to elect the President of Kazakhstan. This was the fifth presidential election held and second without having any formal opposition candidates. With the highest-ever nationwide turnout of 95.2%, the result was a victory for long-term incumbent President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Nur Otan who received 97.8% of the vote, the largest since 1991, thus winning a fifth term in office while his closest challenger, Turgyn Syzdyqov, received only 1.6% of the votes.

Legislative elections were held in Kazakhstan on 20 March 2016. The date was set by president Nursultan Nazarbayev on 20 January 2016, when he dissolved the Mäjilis after it had requested dissolution on 13 January, with the reason cited being the economic crisis caused by low oil prices. Normally, the term of the Mäjilis would have expired in fall of 2016.

Legislative elections were held in Kazakhstan on 10 January 2021 to elect the members of the Mäjilis to the 7th Parliament of Kazakhstan. They were the eighth legislative elections in Kazakhstan's history since independence and coincided with the 2021 local elections. The elections were the first to be held under Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's presidency and the first since 2004 to be held at the normally scheduled date, rather than due to an early dissolution of the Mäjilis.

The 5th Congress of the Ak Zhol Democratic Party was held on 13 March 2005. Co-chairman Alikhan Baimenov was unanimously elected by the 149 delegates to be its first single chairman.

Adal, previously known as Birlik until 2020, was a centre-right political party in Kazakhstan that was formed as a result of merger between Rukhaniyat Party and Democratic Party Adilet on 26 April 2013. The party is led by Serik Sultangali, a Kazakh businessman and has a membership of over 300,000 people as of 2021. Since its creation, the Adal has participated in every parliamentary election, often taking last place in terms of vote share and has not never nominated a presidential candidate for the elections. On 26 April 2022, Adal merged with the Amanat party.

Elections to the Akmola Regional Mäslihat were held on 10 January 2021 to elect the 32 members of the 7th Akmola Regional Mäslihat to coincide with the 2021 Kazakh local elections. It was the first election to be held under newly implemented proportional representation.

Stanislav Vladimirovich Kankurov is a Kazakh politician who is currently serving as the Chairman of the Almaty City branch of the Amanat ruling party since 2023 and a deputy of the Almaty City Mäslihat since 2016.
