A. Lakshmisagar was an Indian politician,advocate,and professor of law. [1] He was a member of the Janata Party and served as the Law Minister in the Ramakrishna Hegde cabinet. He also served as a corporator from 1972 to 1975. He was elected three times consecutively as an MLA to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Chikpet constituency in 1978,1983 and 1985. [2] During his career,he held multiple portfolios including Law and Parliamentary Affairs,Housing,Revenue and Public Grievances,and Urban Development. He once served as the Chief Minister's representative (acting Chief Minister) when Ramakrishna went on an official trip abroad. [3] [4]
Lakshmisagar was born on 8 December 1927,in Lakshmisagar village near Varalakonda. His original name was Chikkakondappa,which was later changed to Lakshmisagar after the village's name. He finished his primary education in Varalakonda and Beachaganahalli and then went to Bangalore for higher and legal education. While still in college,he started working part-time jobs to cover his education and living expenses. He also tutored children and used that money to pay for his studies. He obtained a law degree from Bangalore and later started working as a lecturer. [3]
Lakshmisagar began his political career in the 1970s and was elected as a Bangalore City Municipal Councilor from the Chikkapet ward. He later contested elections from Chikkapet in 1978, [5] 1983,and 1985 and was elected as an MLA for three consecutive terms. [6] He also served as the opposition leader in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from 1982 to 1983 during Gundu Rao's government. [7] He was also a member of the Vidhan Parishad from 1996 to 2002. [3]
Lakshmisagar died on 12 September 2008 at the state-run Bowring Hospital in Bangalore at the age of 80 after a cardiac arrest. Lakshmisagar was a bachelor. [8] During his political tenure,he established government schools in Varalakonda and Somenahalli with his special grant in 2007 when he was a Rajya Sabha member. In recognition of his contributions,a statue in his honor was erected on the school campus. [9]
Haradanahalli Doddegowda Deve Gowda or Devegowda is an Indian politician who served as the Prime Minister of India from 1 June 1996 to 21 April 1997. He was previously the 14th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1994 to 1996. He presently is a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Karnataka. He is the national president of the Janata Dal (Secular) party. Born in a farming family,he joined the Indian National Congress party in 1953,and remained a member until 1962. He was imprisoned during the Emergency. He became President of the state unit of Janata Dal in 1994,and was considered to be a driving force in the party's victory in Karnataka. He served as the 8th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1994 to 1996. In the 1996 general elections,no party won enough seats to form a government. When the United Front,a coalition of regional parties,formed the central government with the support of the Congress,Deve Gowda was unexpectedly chosen to head the government after V. P. Singh and Jyoti Basu declined the post and he was elected Prime Minister. During his tenure as prime minister,he also served as Home Minister for some time. His prime ministerial tenure lasted for less than a year. After his prime ministerial tenure,he was elected to the 12th (1998),14th (2004),15th,and 16th Lok Sabha,as Member of Parliament for the Hassan Lok Sabha constituency. He lost Lok Sabha elections in 2019 from Tumkuru but has been elected to Rajya Sabha since.
Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna is an Indian politician who served as Minister of External Affairs of India from 2009 to October 2012. He was the 10th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004 and the 19th Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008. SM Krishna had served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Vidhan Sabha from December 1989 to January 1993. He was also a member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha at various times from 1971 to 2014. In 2023,Krishna was awarded the Padma Vibhushan,the second highest civilian award of India.
Siddaramaiah,also referred to by his nickname Siddu,is an Indian politician who is serving as the 22nd Chief Minister of Karnataka from 20 May 2023. He also held that position previously from 2013 to 2018,being only the second person to hold that office for a full five-year term. He belongs to the Indian National Congress and is presently the leader of the Congress Legislative Party. He represented the Varuna Assembly constituency from 2023,previously from 2008 to 2018,Badami Assembly constituency from 2018 to 2023,and Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency from 2004 to 2007,1994 to 1999,and from 1983 to 1989 in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1996 to 1999 and from 2004 to 2005 while he was a member of the Janata Dal and Janata Dal (Secular). He also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on two occasions,from 2019 to 2023 and from 2009 to 2013. Siddaramaiah was a member of various Janata Parivar factions for several years.
Bookanakere Siddalingappa Yediyurappa,often referred to by his initials BSY,is an Indian politician. He is been serving as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Parliamentary board committee since 17 August 2022,which is considered the highest office of authority in the party. Ramesh Chandappa Jigajinagi is an Indian politician from Karnataka and currently a member of Lok Sabha. He was Union Minister of State for Drinking Water and Sanitation in 2016. He was member of the Twelfth,Thirteenth,Fourteenth,Fifteenth and Sixteenth Lok Sabha. He was inducted into PM,Narendra Modi's government as a Minister of State for Drinking Water &Sanitation on July 5,2016. He represents the Bijapur constituency (2019-2024) and is currently a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party which he joined in 2002. Jagadish Shivappa Shettar is an Indian politician,who served as the 15th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 2012 to 2013. He is currently serving as Member of Karnataka Legislative Council. He has subsequently served as Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He also served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly during 2008–2009. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Earlier in 2023 he had joined the Indian National Congress,where he quit the BJP on being denied the MLA ticket in 2023. He represented Hubli-Dharwad Central Vidhan Sabha seat,which he resigned in 2023 before the elections. In March 2024,he was announced as the BJP candidate from the Belgaum Constituency for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.
