The AIR Users Blog was a blog about AIR (Advanced Instrument Research) plug-ins for Pro Tools. It was started in October 2008 by Russ Hughes, a musician based in London, United Kingdom. It was the focal point of a community of around 50,000 users a month. It is independent and has no official links with Avid Technology, the owners of the software.

On 25 September 2010 it was announced that a new site the Pro Tools Expert would start, working in tandem to better reflect the changes at both Avid and on the blog.

Background

In August 2005, Avid acquired the German company Wizoo, developers of software based virtual instruments. They further announced the creation of AIR (Advanced Instrument Research) a strategic development which meant Avid would be developing virtual instruments and plug-ins for use in Pro Tools. These plug-ins include both software based effects using the RTAS format and software based instruments (Virtual Instruments).

Aims

The blog is a Non-profit organization support group which has a number of aims:

The training is composed of short HD Videos showing the user how to use a certain aspect of the software. To date there have been 80 videos created for this purpose. [1]

The sounds are patches for use in Structure and to date these FREE instrument patches number over 500. The sounds are created by sampling real instruments and then modified to improve the user's experience. [2]

More recently an initiative called the Patchbay has been started which is a public ftp where users can share their own sounds and effects for use in their Pro Tools sessions.

History

It is understood that the blog was born as a response to the growing dissatisfaction of AIR users who felt that they were not being supported by AVID, the software manufacturer. Hughes responded by saying he would start a blog to support users [3] Since that time the blog has grown rapidly and now has around 400,00 visits per month. [4] The blog has visitors from around the world.

The Author

Russ Hughes is a London based TV producer and musician. His daytime job is producing 3D/VFX for TV commercials and broadcasters, working for some of the biggest brands in the world. He has expertise in marketing, PR and also new media and is highly respected in the sector. [5]

It is understood that Hughes spends around 40 hours a week of his spare time working on blog contributions. The influence of the blog has grown to such an extent that he is now considered to be a leading authority on the software and is invited to speak and teach on it. [6] [7]

In 2012 the AIR Users Blog became the Pro Tools Expert blog to better reflect the expanded remit of supporting Pro Tools Users. It is the largest independent Pro Tools blog in the world.

Russ has done an amazing job of creating and galvanizing a user community for AIR plug-ins through enthusiasm, hard work and a great vision. He has incredible energy and is full of amazing ideas about how to build a tribe, and also how to sustain it. He has real talent and passion for music creation and I hope he can carry on his great work for many years to come.

Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH is a German musical software and hardware company based in Hamburg with satellite offices in Siegburg and London. It develops music writing, recording, arranging, and editing software, most notably Cubase, Nuendo, and Dorico. It also designs audio recording, MIDI hardware interfaces, controllers, and iOS/Android music apps including Cubasis. Steinberg created several industry standard music technologies including the Virtual Studio Technology (VST) format for plug-ins and the ASIO protocol. Steinberg has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Yamaha since 2005.

The first version of VirtualDub, written for Windows 95, to be released on SourceForge was uploaded on August 20, 2000.

It may be thought of as Apple's architectural equivalent to another popular plug-in format, Steinberg's Virtual Studio Technology (VST).

Avid Audio is an American digital audio technology company. It was founded in 1984 by Peter Gotcher and Evan Brooks. The company began as a project to raise money for the founders' band, selling EPROM chips for drum machines. It is a subsidiary of Avid Technology, and during 2010 the Digidesign brand was phased out. Avid Audio products will continue to be produced and will now carry the Avid brand name.

Logic Pro Digital audio workstation

Prosoniq

Prosoniq Products Software was a German software developer of audio and music tools, mostly known for their sonicWORX, OrangeVocoder, TimeFactory and Hartmann Neuron synthesizer products. It also licensed proprietary technologies in the audio/music DSP sector to software manufacturers including Emagic, Steinberg, Digidesign, TwelveTone Systems, Merging, DAVID, AutoDesk/Discreet and others. Headquartered in Karlsruhe, Germany, Prosoniq pioneered the use of artificial neural networks for commercial audio processing.

VENUE is a brand of live sound digital mixing consoles introduced by Digidesign in February 2005. The family now includes 5 different consoles and a number of ways they can be configured. They can all be connected to Pro Tools, the audio editing software also created by Avid/Digidesign, to provide recording and 'Virtual Soundcheck' facilities. One of the system's key marketing points is its use of the same AAX DSP/TDM plugins as Pro Tools, an industry standard digital audio workstation (DAW). This is designed to enable the sounds recorded by the artist in the studio to be easily recreated on stage, and to allow for greater flexibility in signal processing without heavy and mechanical-shock-sensitive racks of external processors. There is also a PC-based offline editor for creation and editing of show files, although there is no audio processing in the editor.

Real-Time AudioSuite (RTAS) is a format of audio plug-in developed by Digidesign, currently Avid Technology for their Pro Tools LE and Pro Tools M-Powered systems, although they can be run on Pro Tools HD and Pro Tools TDM systems. RTAS plug-ins use the processing power of the host computer rather than DSP cards used in the Pro Tools HD systems. As the name suggests, the plug-in architecture is designed to be run in real-time, mimicking hardware inserts on traditional mixing console. This is in contrast to rendering files out of time with effects applied directly to the audio, which in Pro Tools is facilitated by AudioSuite Plug-ins. Avid's AAX format, which runs on both native CPU and Pro Tools HDX DSP, is the replacement for RTAS.

Automatic Duck is a software developer based near Seattle known for their plug-ins that translate edited sequences between Final Cut Pro, Avid, After Effects, Quantel, Pro Tools and other professional digital video editing tools.

Record (software)

Record is a music software program developed by Swedish software developers Propellerhead Software. Designed for recording, arrangement and mixing, it emulates a recording studio, with a mixing desk, a rack of virtual instruments and effects and an audio and MIDI sequencer. Record can be used either as a complete virtual recording studio in itself, or together with Propellerhead Software's Reason.

Studio One (software) Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) application

Studio One is a digital audio workstation (DAW) application, used to create, record, mix and master music and other audio, with functionality also available for video. It is developed by PreSonus and available for macOS and Microsoft Windows. In addition to the commercial editions of the software, PreSonus also distributes a free edition, with reduced functionality. The Professional edition is also available as part of the PreSonus Sphere monthly subscription program.
