D'Andre Sams (born 1992), professionally known as ALLBLACK, is an American rapper from East Oakland, California. Known for his straightforward flow and gritty lyrics about pimping and street life, Sams emerged as a prominent figure in the Bay Area hip-hop scene in the late 2010s. [1] [2]

Early life

Sams was born and raised in the San Antonio neighborhood of East Oakland, near International Boulevard, an area commonly known as the "Murder Dubs" due to the rise of drug-related violence in the 1990s. [3] [1] Sams attended Pinole Valley High School, where he was a standout football player. [3] After high school, he spent time in Santa Barbara and Atlanta from 2011 to 2015, which later influenced his musical perspective and outlook. [4] [5]

Career

2015–2017: Career beginnings

Sams' entry into music was unplanned. He initially served as a hype man for Berkeley rapper Kossisko at The Roxy Theatre in January 2013. [3] [5] [1] Encouraged by his mother to write as a way to deal with anger, Sams began writing raps in his early 20s. [3] His debut project, No Shame, was released in 2015, followed by No Shame 2 in 2016, hosted by prominent Atlanta DJ Trap-a-Holics, known for distributing mixtapes by Gucci Mane and Lil Boosie. [6] [7] [1] The latter marked a turning point in his career, showcasing his unique flow that blended Bay Area influences with a Detroit-style cadence. 2018–present: Rising prominence

Sams' 2018 project Outcalls offered a gritty and humanizing view of pimping and prostitution in the Bay Area. The project featured guest appearances from notable West Coast artists like Nef the Pharaoh, Guapdad 4000, P-Lo, and 03 Greedo, and was produced by Japanese-American producer David Teel. [5] The same year, he collaborated with producer Kenny Beats on the EP 2 Minute Drills, which consisted of eight tracks heavily featuring football analogies. [8]

In October 2020, Sams released the EP No Shame 3, featuring collaborations with Too Short, DaBoii of SOB X RBE. [1] He performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! alongside Offset Jim, Blueface, and G-Eazy. [1]

May 2021 saw the release of TY4FWM (Thank You for Fucking With Me), Sams' debut album featuring production from DJ Fresh and collaborations with artists such as Vince Staples, Drakeo the Ruler, and E-40. [2]

Musical style and themes

Sams' lyrics openly discuss his past involvement in pimping, which he started as a teenager. Sams describes his music as his "diary" and often draws from his pimping experiences as material in his lyrics, while expressing conflicted feelings about this period of his life. [5] [8]

Personal life

Sams' brother and multiple cousins played in the NFL, but Sams himself drifted away from football after the death of several close friends in 2010. Crunk is often up-tempo and one of Southern hip hop's more nightclub-oriented subgenres. Distinguishing itself with other Southern hip hop subgenres, crunk is marked and characterized by its energetic accelerated musical tempo, club appeal, recurrent chants frequently executed in a call and response manner, multilayered synths, its pronounced reliance on resounding 808 basslines, and rudimentary musical arrangement. An archetypal crunk track frequently uses a dominant groove composed of a nuanced utilization of intricately multilayered keyboard synthesizers organized in a recurring pattern, seamlessly shifting from a lower to a higher pitch that encompasses the song's primary central rhythm, both in terms of its harmonic and melodic aspects. The main groove is then wrapped up with looped, stripped-down, and crisp 808 dance claps and manipulated snare rolls coupled and accompanied by a bassline of thumping 808 kick drums. The term "crunk" was also used throughout the 2000s as a blanket term to denote any style of Southern hip hop, a side effect of the genre's breakthrough to the mainstream. The word derives from its African-American Vernacular English past-participle form, "crunk", of the verb "to crank". It refers to being excited or high on drugs.

Trap is a subgenre of hip hop music which originated in the Southern United States, with lyrical references to trap starting in 1991 but the modern sound of trap appearing in 1999. The genre gets its name from the Atlanta slang term "trap house", a house used exclusively to sell drugs. Trap music is known for its simple, rhythmic, minimalistic productions that uses synthesized drums, and is characterized by complex hi-hat patterns, snare drums, bass drums, some tuned with a long decay to emit a bass frequency, and lyrical content that often focuses on drug use and urban violence.

Drill is a subgenre of hip hop music that originated in Chicago in the early 2010s. It is sonically similar to the trap music subgenre and lyrically similar to the gangsta rap subgenre. Early drill artists are noted for their explicit, confrontational style of lyricism and association with crime in Chicago, especially the Black Disciples and Gangster Disciples. The genre progressed into the American mainstream in 2012 following the success of pioneering rappers like Chief Keef, Lil Reese, Lil Durk, Fredo Santana, G Herbo, Lil Bibby and King Louie, who had many local fans and a significant internet presence alongside producer Young Chop. Chief Keef, in particular, is considered the primary progenitor and popularizer of drill music, responsible for bringing it to the mainstream.
