ANS Group of Companies

The ANS Group of Companies is a news and broadcasting company in Azerbaijan. [1] [2]

It was founded by three young Azeri journalists, brothers Vahid and Seyfulla Mustafayev in 1990. The Company name, ANS, derives from the first letters of Azerbaijan News Service. ANS was the first privately owned company in the former Soviet Union. [3] [4]

Being an independent news company, ANS Group of Companies has played a significant role in the development of the independent media in Azerbaijan. [2] [5] Currently ANS Group of Companies owns four sub-companies: ANS TV, ANS ChM, ANS Press and ANS Kommers (Also first Azerbaijan Watches maker Company VMF). The group has also been known for its outspokenness, as seen through its media outlets. [6] [7]

Mustafayev, with the medical degree and no formal background in journalism save for a year of on the job training, created a video record of the early stages of the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, most of the documentary had to be shot from the frontline which ultimately was the cause of his abrupt death due to mortar wounds.

ANS Radio or ANS ChM was a private news and music radio station located in Baku, Azerbaijan, which broadcasts on the 102 frequency. The station also streams content over the Internet for free. ANS ChM was one of the first private and independent FM radio broadcasting service in the Caucasus and Central Asia regions when it was established in May 1994, and the station itself claims to be the first. The station currently broadcasts a mix of music, entertainment, and news.

He is a president of ANS Group of Companies and was a co-founder and President of ANS Independent Broadcast Company in Azerbaijan before it was closed in 2016. Starting his career in the early 1990s, Mustafayev quickly made his way up due to his business skills. He created several films about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict events.

Media freedom in Azerbaijan is severely curtailed. Most Azerbaijanis receive their information from mainstream television, which is unswervingly pro-government and under strict government control. According to a 2012 report of the NGO "Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS)" Azerbaijani citizens are unable to access objective and reliable news on human rights issues relevant to Azerbaijan and the population is under-informed about matters of public interest.
