A Bear Named Wojtek is a 2023 Scottish-Polish animated short film directed by Iain Gardner. [2] The 28-minute animated film about the true story [3] of Wojtek, the war bear, [4] has been selected in various international film festivals, including the Annecy International Animation Film Festival [5] and the Manchester Animation Film Festival. [6] It also won a British Animation Award for Best Long Form Animation [7] as well as a Venice TV Award for Best Animation. The film was first broadcast on BBC Alba on the 8th May 2024. [8] It was shortlisted for the Best Animated Short Film category at the 97th Academy Awards. [9]

Plot

A Bear Named Wojtek brings to life the extraordinary true story of a Syrian brown bear adopted by Polish soldiers during World War II. This half-hour animated short follows Wojtek from the Persian Desert to the Battle of Monte Cassino, where he becomes both a soldier and a symbol of resilience. As the soldiers forge an unbreakable bond with Wojtek, the film explores themes of friendship, identity, and the search for belonging in times of upheaval.

Wojtek was a Syrian brown bear adopted by soldiers of the 2nd Polish Corps during World War II. As a young cub, his mother was shot by hunters, and he was found in the mountains of Iran by a young boy. The boy then sold him to a group of Polish soldiers who were in the country after being evacuated from the Soviet Union. To provide for his rations and transportation, he was eventually enlisted officially as a soldier with the rank of private, and was subsequently promoted to corporal.

Triggerfish is a computer animation film studio based in Cape Town, South Africa and Galway, Ireland. Michaela Pavlátová is a Czech animator, film director and teacher. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for Words, Words, Words (1991) and won the Short Film Golden Bear for Repete (1995). As a feminist experimental animator Michaela's work explores themes of sex, gender, philosophy and relationality. Beyond her independent work she worked as the art director for Wildbrain Inc.
