The Gramado Film Festival is an international film festival held annually in the Brazilian city of Gramado, Rio Grande do Sul, since 1973. In 1992, the festival began to award Latin American films produced outside of Brazil. It is the biggest film festival in the country.

Antônio Abujamra was a Brazilian theatre and television director and actor. Having majored in journalism and philosophy at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul in 1957, he started a career as a theatre critic while he directed and acted in his own plays at the university theatre. Professionally, he made his debut as a theatre director in 1961, and as an actor in 1987, acting in both theatre and television. In 1989, he gained national fame for his role as Ravengar in Rede Globo's telenovela Que Rei Sou Eu?, which became his best known role. In that same year, Abujamra won the Best Actor award at the Gramado Film Festival for his role in the film Festa. From 2000 onward, he was the presenter on TV Cultura's interview program Provocações. His son André Abujamra is a score composer, while his niece Clarisse Abujamra, is also an actress.

Lauro Escorel Filho, most known as Lauro Escorel, is an American-born Brazilian cinematographer and film director. He was born during his father, a Ministry of External Relations, stay in Washington, DC. He first worked as an assistant to Dib Lutfi and Affonso Beato, and made his debut in 1971 on Leon Hirszman's São Bernardo, which won Gramado Film Festival Best Cinematography Award. He directed the short film Libertários, winner of Margarida de Prata Award from the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil, in 1976. In 1978, he would win again the Gramado Film Festival Best Cinematography Award for his work on Héctor Babenco's Lúcio Flávio, o Passageiro da Agonia. His first feature film, Sonho sem Fim, won the Jury Special Award at the 1986 Gramado Film Festival. Ironweed (1987), another Babenco's film, would make him more known internationally.
Something in the Air is a 2002 Brazilian drama film directed by Helvécio Ratton. It is based on the actual history about Rádio Favela, a community radio broadcaster established in Aglomerado da Serra, a favela of Belo Horizonte in the 1980s. It shows how it was persecuted by the police while four friends try to keep the radio. Alexandre Moreno, Adolfo Moura, Babu Santana and Benjamim Abras were chosen to star the film after 3,000 people tried for their roles. It was shot in Aglomerado da Serra and used about 300 of the local people as extras.
Eduardo Escorel de Morais, most known as Eduardo Escorel, is a Brazilian film editor and director. He debuted as an editor on the Joaquim Pedro de Andrade's The Priest and the Girl (1965). With his first feature film, Lição de Amor, he won the Best Director Award at the 1976 Gramado Film Festival. He was also awarded Best Director for his second film, Ato de Violência, this time at the 1980 Brasília Film Festival. He won Best Editing Award for Guerra Conjugal and O Chamado de Deus at the 1974 and 2000 Brasília Film Festival respectively, and for Dois Perdidos numa Noite Suja at the 2002 Gramado Film Festival.
André Klotzel is a Brazilian film director, producer and screenwriter. Born in São Paulo, Klotzel always enjoyed photography and thus studied it at the School of Communications and Arts at the University of São Paulo in 1973. In the following year, he took an internship to work with Anibal Massaini at the Boca do Lixo and also directed a short film. He worked on several functions, having worked in almost 15 films in the period he was in the college. In 1985, he directed his first feature film, A Marvada Carne, which won the Best Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Director at the Gramado Film Festival. He won the same awards at the same festival film in 2001 for Memórias Póstumas.
Lucio Flavio is a 1977 Brazilian film directed by Héctor Babenco based on the book of the same name by José Louzeiro, who co-wrote the screenplay. It stars Reginaldo Faria as Lúcio Flávio, a famous bandit in Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s. Babenco did not want to limit the story to Lúcio Flávio, and stated it was also a film about Esquadrão da Morte, a death squad from the 1960s.
