A preliminary discussion of literary reform

Towards literary reform (also translated as A preliminary discussion of literary reform [1] etc.) is an article published by Hu Shih on 1 January 1917 in the Chinese journal La Jeunesse volume 2, issue 5. Hu was a graduate student at Columbia University at the time, and the editor of the journal was Chen Duxiu.

Hu proposed 8 theses to reform Chinese literature: [2]

  1. The writing must be concrete.
  2. Don’t imitate ancient writers.
  3. Respect grammar. [3]
  4. Don’t moan without cause.
  5. Get rid of clichés.
  6. Avoid literary references.
  7. Symmetry is not mandatory.
  8. No need to avoid colloquialism.
