Aasha Encounter is a 2022 Indian Telugu-language docudrama film based on the 2019 gang assault and subsequent killing of a young woman in Hyderabad. It is written and directed by Anand Chandra. [1] [2] The film was released on 1 January 2022.
Disha gang rape and killing on 27 November 2019 shocked the entire country when 4 young guys in a Lorry targeted a Scooty driving young veterinary doctor and brutally gang raped her crossing the upper limits in the crime history of India. [3]
This film was initially announced to be jointly directed by Ram Gopal Varma and Anand Chandra under the title Disha Encounter, but the name was changed due to the victim's family asking the police regarding the same. [5] However, the film had issues getting a CBFC certificate and Varma later disassociated himself from the film. [6]
The film was released on 1 January 2022. [7] An NTV critic gave a mixed review for the film, appreciating the performances and score while criticizing screenplay and inconclusive climax. [8]
Penmetsa Ram Gopal Varma, often referred to by his initials RGV, is an Indian film director, screenwriter and producer, known for his works in Telugu cinema in addition to Hindi, Kannada language films, and television. Varma has directed films across multiple genres, including parallel cinema and docudrama noted for their gritty realism, technical finesse, and craft. Regarded as one of the pioneers of new age Indian cinema, he was featured in the BBC World series Bollywood Bosses in 2004.
