Abbas Ibrahim (born August 13, 1940) is a Maldivian politician. He is the brother-in-law of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Ibrahim is a former speaker of the Special Constitutional Majlis (parliament) of the Maldives from its convocation in 2004 to 2006. He has served as an MP since 1981 (from 1985 to 1995 he was one of the president's appointed MPs for the Majlis), and as of 2008 was the MP for Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

Background

He is from Endherimaage in Malé. His sister Nasreena Ibrahim was the First Lady of the Maldives from 1977 to 2008, and his brother Ilyas Ibrahim is the former Minister for Health and MP for Laamu Atoll. When Ilyas Ibrahim was tried in absentia in 1993 Abbas Ibrahim was removed from his post as Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture. [1]

Abbas Ibrahim was selected by the president as the Speaker of the Special Constitutional Majlis in 2004 after a 'show of hands' election, in defiance of the constitutional requirement for a secret vote. To enforce his election, Gayoom demanded a 'show of hands' among Majlis members.[ citation needed ]

Abbas Ibrahim was the son of Ibrahim Abbas (born Abdul Gadir and formerly known as Dhon Maniku). He was a wealthy trader and advisor to Mohamed Amin Didi who ruled from 1944 until 1953 first as Home Minister and then President for less than a year. Abbas Ibrahim's father was a self-made man who received high 'beykalun'[ definition needed ] status late in life. As Ibrahim Nasir rose to power, he was working as a trusted servant of Muhammad Fareed Didi. He served his leaders faithfully and became boss of Maafannu, one of Malé's four wards. Together with his brother Ilyas Ibrahim, Abbas Ibrahim inherited control of Maafannu from his father. Abbas was a highly political ward leader like his father. [2]

The history of the Maldives is intertwined with the history of the broader Indian subcontinent and the surrounding regions, comprising the areas of South Asia and Indian Ocean; and the modern nation consisting of 26 natural atolls, comprising 1194 islands. The President heads the executive branch and appoints the Cabinet; Like many presidential democracies, each member of the cabinet need to be approved by the Parliament. The President, along with their pick for Vice President, are directly elected by the denizens to a five-year term by a secret ballot. Once in office, they could be re-elected to second 5-year term, which is the limit allowed by the Constitution. The current President of the Maldives is Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who was sworn into office on July 13, 2018 when his predecessor, Abdulla Yameen, lost the 2018 presidential election. Yameen followed his own predecessor Mohamed Nasheed's forced resignation in a coup led by the police. Nasheed reportedly resigned involuntarily to forestall an escalation of violence, and was placed in jail, before being forced into exile, from which he eventually returned.

Maumoon Abdul Gayoom

Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is a Maldivian politician and an Islamic scholar who ruled the country as the President of Maldives from 1978 to 2008. After serving as Minister of Transport, he was nominated as President by the Majlis (Parliament) of the Maldives and succeeded Ibrahim Nasir in 1978. He was defeated in the October 2008 presidential election. In opposition, he continued to serve as leader of the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party until January 2010, when he retired from active politics.

Ibrahim Nasir Rannabandeyri Kilegefan, KCMG, NGIV was a Maldivian politician who served as Prime Minister of the Maldives under Sultan Muhammad Fareed Didi from December 1957 to 1968 and succeeded him to become the first President of the Second Republic from 1968 to 1978.

Fathulla Jameel was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives from 1978 to 2005.

Black Friday, August 13, 2004, was the crackdown by the Maldivian National Security Service (NSS) — later Maldivian National Defence Force — on a peaceful protest in the capital city of Maldives, Malé. This unplanned and unorganized demonstration was the largest such protest in the country's history. Beginning on the evening of August 12, 2004, the demonstration grew and continued until it was forcefully ended on the afternoon of August 13, 2004. Protesters initially demanding the freeing of the pro-reformists arrested on the afternoon of August 12, 2004. As the protest continued to grow, people demanded the resignation of president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who had been in power since 1978. What started as a peaceful demonstration ended after 22 hours, as the country's darkest day in recent history. Several people were severely injured as NSS personnel used riot batons and teargas on unarmed civilians.

Muhammad Fareed Didi Sultan of Maldives

King Muhammad Fareed Didi, , the son of the Sultan Prince Abdul Majeed Didi, was the last Sultan of Maldives and the first Maldivian monarch to assume the title of "King" with the style of "His Majesty". He was the Sultan of the Maldives from March 7, 1954, until November 11, 1968. He was deposed in 1968 from the throne when Maldives became a republic, and died the following year in Maldives.

Fuvahmulah City is an island (atoll) in the Maldives. It is under Maldives administrative divisions of Gnaviyani Atoll or Nyaviyani Atoll. The inhabitants speak a distinctive form of the Dhivehi language, known as "Fuvahmulaki baha".

Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party is a Maldivian MP, philanthropist and a businessman. Thasmeen started his career as a civil servant and after venturing into politics he was elected to Peoples Majlis from Baa Atoll and later he served in Maldives President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s cabinet and was his running mate in the first multiparty election held in the Maldives in 2008.

Ilyas Ibrahim is the brother-in-law of the former President of the Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom. He was a minister in Maumoon's cabinet for a long time and served as an MP for the capital city Malé from 1980 to 1995. He also served as the MP for Laamu Atoll, & a member of People's Special Majilis, from 2003 to 2008.

Dhadimagu is an administrative division of Fuvahmulah, Maldives. It is the largest division of the island, located on the north-west of the island. Ilyas Hussain Ibrahim

Ilyas Hussain Ibrahim is a Maldivian politician. He was an official in the Ministry of Atolls Development from 1990 to 2004, then a member of the Special Majilis (parliament) representing A.DH Atoll from 2004 to 2008. Between 2008 and 2013 he was deputy minister or minister of state for Immigration and Emigration, Housing and Environment, and then Defense and National Security.

The Cabinet of the Maldives is the most senior level of the executive branch of the Government of the Maldives. It is made up of the President, the Vice President, Attorney General and the Ministers.

Abdulla Shahid Maldivian politician

Abdulla Shahid is the current Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Maldives as of the 2018 election.

Husnu Al Suood is a Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Maldives since 8 December 2019. He was the Attorney General of the Maldives from June 2009 to August 2010. He served as the Chief Judge of the Civil Court and as a member of the Judicial Service Commission of Maldives. He also served as a member of the National Human Rights Commission of the Maldives from 2003 to 2005. As a member of the Special Majlis Suood participated in drafting the current constitution of the Republic of Maldives.

Alhan Fahmy

Alhan Fahmy was a Parliament member of the 17th People's Majlis sitting of Maldives representing the Addu Atoll Feydhoo Constituency representing the then, opposition party DRP under the leadership of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom whose thirty year reign as president came to an end in the 2008 presidential election. As the 17th People's Majlis commenced, the fresh faced energetic and the charisma seen during debates from Alhan Fahmy was widely admired by the general public. Specially among the youth population of the country where in the previous years, new young fresh faces sitting in the Parliament was almost never seen. However, his popularity has been diminishing year after year. Mostly due to his dialogue in front of the general public was scrutinised heavily when he changed his political allegiance from one party to the other so many times and alleged acceptance of bribes being the main reason for it. The allegations were put forth due to his sudden change of lifestyle in terms of luxurious and lavish changes. Most recently Alhan entered to the Local Council Election of 2020 which was delayed due to Covid-19 pandemic and was finally held on the 10th of April 2021. He contested for the mayoral post of the capital city of Male' as an independent candidate where he faced a humiating loss where he received only 265 votes which was just 1%. Ever since he finished his term in the 17th People's Majlis, Alhan has never managed to get any success in any form and area of elections held in Maldives from Parliamentary elections to Local Council Elections as well. However, after his heavy loss in the recent Local Council Elections, he gave a statement to an online news platform citing his interest to contest the next immediate General Presidential election which will be held in 2023 under the Maldivian Democratic Party ticket even though at the moment he is not even a registered member of the party. This statement created even more backlash towards him from the General public. He has changed political allegiance and political parties quite a few times.

Ibrahim Mohamed Solih Maldivian politician, President of the Maldives

Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, better known as Ibu (އިބޫ), is a Maldivian politician and the current President of the Maldives who assumed office on 17 November 2018.

Abdul Sattar Moosa Didi was Maldivian diplomat and politician. He was born 1936 or 1937. He died in November 2015 in Bangkok.
