Abdelmonem Bin Eisa Alserkal is an Emirati businessman and founder of Alserkal, Alserkal Avenue, Alserkal Arts Foundation and Alserkal Advisory. [1]

Early years and education

Alserkal was born and raised in the United Arab Emirates. His grandfather was involved in setting up Dubai State Telephone Company Limited, the UAE's first telecommunication firm. As a child, Alserkal encountered art during his father's collection of books on Islamic art and Western masterpieces. [2]

After graduating from a university in the United States, he began his career in real estate development in the UAE. [3]

Career

A patron of the arts, he is the founder of Alserkal, and Alserkal Avenue, [4] an arts district and established cultural hub housed in a former industrial district in the Al Quoz area of Dubai. [2] Launched in 2008, Alserkal Avenue is home a to mix of art galleries, restaurants, performance venues, and co-working spaces. [5] Alserkal initiated an expansion of Alserkal Avenue in early 2015. In addition to more gallery space, the expansion added a black box theatre, independent cinema, and outdoor performance venue. [6]

In March 2017 Abdelmonem inaugurated Concrete (Alserkal Avenue), a multipurpose venue and the first building in the UAE to be completed by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). [7] In April 2019, Concrete was shortlisted for the 2019 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. [8] Alserkal and the Alserkal family launched Alserkal Arts Foundation [9] in March 2019, to support multi-disciplinary practices across public art commissions, residencies, research grants [10] and educational programmes. Alserkal Advisory was launched in 2021. [11]

Featured in Surface magazine's 2016 Power 100 list, Abdelmonem serves on the British Museum's Contemporary and Modern Middle Eastern Art Acquisition Group, the Tate's Middle East and North Africa Acquisition Committee, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation's Middle Eastern Circle. [12]

Alserkal is also a board member of Etisalat Group. [13]

Awards

Alserkal's family have been awarded the Patron of the Arts award twice, in 2012 and 2013, by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. [14] [15]

Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is an Emirati royal and politician who serves as minister of finance of the United Arab Emirates, deputy ruler of Dubai and chairman of Dubai Media Incorporated. He was named as deputy ruler in February 2008 when his elder brother Hamdan was made crown prince. He served as deputy ruler alongside his uncle Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum until the latter's death in March 2021. Since then until 2023, he was the sole deputy ruler under his father Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's reign. In April 2023, his younger brother Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Rashid was also named deputy ruler. In September 2021, he was appointed deputy prime minister and finance minister of the UAE.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) was founded on May 19, 2007 by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Sheikh Mohammed stated that the money is meant to bridge the knowledge gap between the Arab region and the developed world, improving the standard of education and research in the region, developing leadership programs for youth, and stimulating job creation.

Alserkal Avenue is an industrial compound hosting warehouses in the industrial zone of Al Quoz, in Dubai. The area is an arts and culture district for Dubai with lineup of galleries, facilities and platforms, such as Alserkal Avenue that houses residencies for local and global artists. In March 2017, Alserkal Avenue inaugurated Concrete, its new space in the Avenue and the first project to be completed in the United Arab Emirates by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), founded by Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate Rem Koolhaas.

Concrete is a multi-disciplinary space located on Alserkal Avenue in the Al Quoz district of Dubai. It is the first building in the United Arab Emirates to be completed by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). With multiple configurations, the 600-square-metre Concrete has double-height ceilings, movable walls and a translucent facade that can be positioned to create indoor-outdoor experiences.
