Abdul Hamid Khan (born 13 December 1965) is a Singaporean former badminton player. He is a one-time Olympian [2] and a seven-time national champion.
Hamid entered the national squad in 1985. Then, he was just 19 and had won his first national champion men's singles title. He went on to win another six more until 1995. [3] He also represented Singapore to compete in two events at the 1992 Summer Olympics. [2]
Hamid retired at the age of 30. He turned to coaching and also served as the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA)’s director of coaching for two years starting in 2000. [3] He is currently the Deputy President of SBA. [4]
Hamid married his long-time girlfriend Murni in April 1993. [5] They have two sons, Irsyad and Imran, and a daughter, Nur Insyirah. Nur Insyirah, like her father, is also a national badminton player and she represented Singapore in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games held in Kuala Lumpur. [6]
Ronald Susilo is a Singaporean former badminton player. Susilo was ranked sixth, his highest ranking, in 2004.
Jiang Yanmei is a Chinese-born Singaporean badminton player. She competed at the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics; 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games; and also 2006 Asian Games.
The Singapore Open is a badminton event that has been held in Singapore annually since 1929. Ong Poh Lim was a Malayan/Singaporean badminton player who had won numerous national and international titles from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. Known for his quickness and his aggressive, unorthodox playing style, Ong won many singles and doubles titles, including the Singapore, Malayan, All-England, French, Danish and Thomas Cup championships in the 1940s and 1950s. He also invented the backhand flick serve known as the “crocodile serve”, a tactic that had been routinely used in the modern game. Ong was a keen rival to badminton legend Wong Peng Soon.
Kadir Syed Abdul, born 16 February 1948, was the first Singaporean to win a medal for boxing in the Commonwealth Games, where he was awarded the bronze medal. He has also been a representative for Singapore in various regional meets.
