Singaporean National Badminton Championships is an annual badminton tournament held in Singapore since 1961. [1]
In 1961, Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) started a local championships [1] to find talents to represent Singapore in regional and international competitions after the previous championships became an open invitation championships in 1957. [2]

Tan Chong Tee was a Chinese resistance fighter based in Singapore and Malaya during World War II. An accomplished badminton player before the war, he joined Force 136 around 1942 after Singapore fell to the Japanese. In 1944, while on a mission, Tan, along with Lim Bo Seng and other Force 136 members, was captured by the Japanese. He was subjected to torture during his captivity. After the war, he returned to playing badminton and later became a businessman.
Wong Peng Soon, was a Malayan/Singaporean badminton player who reigned as a top player in Malaya from the 1930s to the 1950s when it was a single nation. Noted for his smooth but powerful strokes and graceful footwork, he won the singles title seven times in Singapore and eight times in Malaya during this period, as well as being the top player in the All England, the Danish Open, the Indian and Philippines championships to name a few.
The Singapore Open is a badminton event that has been held in Singapore annually since 1929. Badminton World Federation categorised Singapore Open as one of the six BWF World Tour Super 750 events in the BWF events structure since 2023.
The Malaysian National Badminton Championships is a tournament organized by the Badminton Association of Malaysia to crown the best badminton players in Malaysia. The tournament started in the 1980s and is held annually.
Ong Poh Lim was a Malayan/Singaporean badminton player who had won numerous national and international titles from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. Known for his quickness and his aggressive, unorthodox playing style, Ong won many singles and doubles titles, including the All-England, Danish, French, Malayan, Singapore and Thomas Cup championships in the 1940s and 1950s. He also invented the backhand flick serve known as the “crocodile serve”, a tactic that had been routinely used in the modern game. Ong was a keen rival to badminton legend Wong Peng Soon.
Xing Aiying is a Chinese-born Singaporean former badminton player who competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Jessica Tan Wei Han is a Singaporean badminton player. Together with Terry Hee, they won their first BWF World Tour title as a duo at the 2022 India Open. Tan along with Hee also won the gold medal in the mixed doubles event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, a first for Singapore in that discipline at the Games. Jessica Tan and her husband Terry Hee were nominated for the Straits Times Singaporean of the Year Award 2022.

Cheam June Wei is a Malaysian badminton player. He was the mixed doubles gold medalist at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics.
Loh Kean Yew is a Singaporean badminton player. He is the former men's singles world champion, winning the title at the 2021 BWF World Championships, becoming the first Singaporean to achieve this feat.
Pearly Tan Koong Le is a Malaysian badminton player who entered the national team in 2013. She was the gold medalists in the women's doubles and mixed team event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. In the junior event, she won the girls' doubles silver at the 2018 Asian and World Junior Championships.

The 1929 Singapore Open, also known as the 1929 Singapore Open Singles Badminton Championship, took place from 19 October – 16 November 1929 at the Old Chinese Chin Woo Athletic Association Hall in City Hall with the final been played at the Singapore Chinese Girls' School Hall in Somerset, Singapore. The ties were played over a month with the first round ties being played on the 19th of October and the final was played on the 16th of November. The championship started as a men's singles competition before the rest of the disciplines were added in the subsequent editions.
Badminton was introduced to Singapore by the British in the early 19th century. By the mid-1920s, the game became increasingly popular and spread quickly to the rest of the local population. Amid the rising popularity, badminton enthusiasts began forming clubs, or “parties”, to meet and play the game. It was during this period that the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) was established to promote the sport and organise competitions. The first official annual open championships was held in that period with the best players from the tournament such as E. J. Vass, Tan Chong Tee, Alice Pennefather and Ong Siew Eng were chosen to represent Singapore in the regional tournaments.
Tay Wei Ming is a Singaporean para-badminton player. He was Singapore's first ever Para-Badminton world champion. He won the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships in 2017, when he partnered Indonesia's Suryo Nugroho to defeat the World No.1 Malaysian pair of Cheah Liek Hou and Hairol Fozi Saaba to claim gold in the men’s doubles SU5.
Edwin Joseph Vass, was a Singaporean badminton player who reigned supreme in Singapore and Malaya from the 1920s to the mid-1930s. He was regarded as one of Singapore's badminton pioneers and the nation first high-level badminton champion. Known for his courtcraft, mastery of strokes and precise shot placement, he won the Singapore Open singles title five times and remained unbeaten in that event up until his retirement. Vass's rivals during his active playing career were See Gim Hock and Selangor's A. S. Samuel, a semi-finalist at the All England in 1939.
