Aberdeen University Rifle Club is one of four student rifle clubs competing in the Scottish Student Sport Rifle Competition Circuit. The club currently trains with Robert Gordon's University Rifle Club.
The University of Aberdeen are known to have entered The Aberdeenshire and District Smallbore Shooting Association regional shooting competitions as far back as 1919 under the name of the "OTC". These competitions are now being won 90 years later by the Aberdeen University Rifle Club. The club used to be known as the Aberdeen University Small Arms Club (AUSAC).
The club originally shot under Elphinstone Hall in the heart of the University of Aberdeen campus, with a later move to the Portlethen Club where they shared the range. In the 1990s the Aberdeen University Rifle Club moved to the Denwood Target Shooting Centre, which boasts a 20 lane 50m range, a 20 lane 100 yard range and a multipurpose indoor 25 yard range with the capacity for 10m air rifle. The club room includes a kitchen, pool table[ citation needed ] and large social area. This facility is unequalled in Scotland and is the finest range in Scotland.[ citation needed ]
The Aberdeen University Rifle Club currently competes in Scottish Student Sport and British Universities and Colleges Sport as core competitions. Outwith the university competitions, the club has members that compete in NSRA, STS and county association competitions. The stand out success being defeating Bon Accord Rifle Club, who hold the British Record and were defending champions in the British Club Championships in 2008. The university team recorded the highest score in the country for this round.
The Aberdeen University Rifle Club has been a standout sport for the University of Aberdeen in the past. The club led the SUS competition table for numerous awards and often completed clean sweeps in the SUS competitions. In recent times, success at the Aberdeen University Rifle Club has been illustrated by individual members taking medals in the Scottish Student Sport Rifle Grand Prix Series and Championships as well as a bronze medal in the 2018 BUCS Indoor Championships.
The club's success has been recognised in past years by either the club or a member winning all five of the universities sports trophies on at least one occasion.
The AJM Edwards Memorial Award- Awarded to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to University sport over a number of years.
Centenary Cup- This cup is presented to an individual or team who excels in a single event during the previous sporting season.
The Sandy Morrison Memorial Trophy- Presented to an individual who has performed to an exceptionally high level at his or her chosen sport.
The Allender Memorial Trophy- This is awarded to the most deserving club at the discretion of the Blues Committee, which consider competitive performances, as well as fund-raising, social events, training and tours. Basically it's our club of the year trophy.
Furthermore, significant recognition has occurred with SUS awarding two of their three prestigious awards to the Aberdeen University Rifle Club. This is against all 17 Scottish Universities approximately 500 club and representative teams. Gordon Cox won the first ever volunteer of the year award in 2007 and the club won best team award in 2009. Victoria Walls was the 2017/18 winner of the Sandy Morrison Memorial Trophy, crowning her Athlete of the Year.
The rifle club has a long history of international representation. There are many British and Scottish records held by past and present students of the club. Currently nine past and present students of the University of Aberdeen can be found in the Scottish national squad. Many of these have gone on to represent Great Britain on the world stage.
There have been notable ad hoc success for the club's members such as the Scottish Commonwealth youth runner up and the award for the best City of Aberdeen sporting student.
There have been numerous representatives from the University of Aberdeen but currently the only medal winner is Neil Stirton who won silver at Munich World Cup 2008.

The Aberdeen University Rifle Club has had members represent Great Britain at the World University Games. These students have included Heather Rudd, James Paterson and Jonty Barron.
The Scottish Universities Smallbore Rifle team would annually contain numerous University of Aberdeen students. It has not been unheard of for the winning Scottish team at the Home Nations international to be made up of and captained by 75% University of Aberdeen students.
Heriot-Watt University Football Club is a football club based at Riccarton Campus, on the western fringes of Edinburgh. The club's first team plays in the East of Scotland League First Division. Home matches are played on a 3G synthetic pitch within the John Brydson Arena on the university campus at Riccarton. In weekend competition, the club also enters a team into the Lowlands Under-20 Development League; and another into Lothian & Edinburgh Amateur Football Association competition.
Jason Parker is an American sport shooter, one of the world's leading 10 m Air Rifle shooters, although he has also had some successes in Three positions competitions. He has never won an Olympic medal, but he won the Air Rifle event at the 2002 ISSF World Shooting Championships. He has also held the final world record in this event on several occasions. He lost it to Zhu Qinan of China at the 2004 Olympics, but at an ISSF World Cup competition the following spring he equalled Zhu's 702.7 points, and they shared the world record until October 2006.
The National Small-bore Rifle Association (NSRA) is the national governing body for all small-bore rifle and pistol target shooting in the United Kingdom, including airgun and match crossbow shooting.
Located in Earlsfield in South West London, The Borough of Wandsworth Rifle Club is one of the oldest clubs belonging to the National Smallbore Rifle Association in the United Kingdom. The club has indoor and outdoor ranges for small-bore rifle target shooting, as well as air pistol and air rifle facilities.
The ANZAC Rifle Range is a rifle range located on the Malabar Headland, Malabar, in the City of Randwick local government area of New South Wales, Australia. It is headquarters to the New South Wales Rifle Association, and hosts the annual NSW Queen's Prize shooting competitions. The range is located on land owned by the Commonwealth of Australia.
In the sport of shinty, there are several clubs which play under the banner of one of the Scottish universities. However, these clubs are not always student teams in the strictest sense of the word, and have a long history of participation at national senior level. Since the introduction of a summer season, only the Aberdeen University Shinty Club continues to play in the senior leagues, although Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews have all done so in the past.
Matthew Thomson is a 50 m Rifle shooter who won two gold medals at the 2006 ISSF World Shooting Championships. He won gold for the Junior Men's Prone competition with a score of 593 and also led the British Junior Men's team to its first gold in 24 years.
The Elcho Shield is an annual long range shooting competition between national teams of eight from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The trophy holder was originally able to choose the venue of the competition, however, since the NRA's move to Surrey from Wimbledon in 1890, the competition has been held at National Shooting Centre, Bisley in Surrey, England. It is usually contested during the NRA Imperial Meeting.
Aberdeen University Sports Union (AUSU) is the sports union at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. It is a constituent part of Aberdeen University Students' Association. It is not responsible for facilities and rents time for its clubs from Aberdeen Sports Village.
Aberdeen University Rugby Football Club (AURFC) is the rugby union team at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. The men's team play in Caledonia North Three; the women's team play in the university leagues.
Smallbore rifle shooting, sometimes known as miniature rifle shooting, is a set of disciplines of shooting sports. Smallbore shooting uses smaller-calibre rifles, typically chambered in .22 Long Rifle, at ranges generally of 100 yards (91 m) or shorter. Depending on the range, it can either be conducted indoors or outdoors.
The Welsh Target Shooting Federation (WTSF) is the governing body for shooting sports in Wales. The Federation is based within the Sport Wales National Centre in Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. The WTSF represents and supports its member bodies in promoting and developing shooting sports in Wales, engaging with Sport Wales, Team Wales, the Welsh Government, British Shooting and others.

Charles Maitland Yorke Trotter was a British sports shooter and photographer who represented Guernsey and Kenya in both fullbore and smallbore disciplines. Trotter's achievements in rifle shooting made him one Guernsey's most decorated sportsmen.
Andrew St George Tucker (1937–2003) was a Scottish-born, sports shooter who represented England and Great Britain shooting smallbore and fullbore target rifle. He won the Queen's Prize at Bisley twice, medalled at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland as well as winning the NSRA Lord Roberts Trophy for smallbore, He also won the Grand Aggregates at both the NRA Imperial Meeting and NSRA National Smallbore Meeting. He is the first and only person to win the "big four" of both British titles and both Grand Aggregates. He ran Andrew Tucker Gunsmiths, manufacturing firearms and target shooting equipment including jackets, rifle slings and gloves.
Donald McIntosh is a Scottish rifle shooter and coach from Elgin. He represented Scotland for the first time in 1989 at the Commonwealth Shooting Federation Championships in Wales. He has been capped 60 times, making him the seventh most capped Scottish shooter. He represented Scotland in the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games where he was unable to replicate his previous gold medal success in the Commonwealth Shooting Federation Championships. Donald began his international coaching career at the 2003 World University Shooting Championships and continues to coach his younger daughter Seonaid McIntosh and coached his older daughter Jennifer McIntosh until her retirement in 2018. He is the owner of Edinkillie Sports Services.
The Sovereign's Prize is a British fullbore target rifle shooting competition. It is the climax of the National Rifle Association's annual Imperial Meeting and is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious prizes in the sport globally. The prize is typically referred to as the Queen's Prize or the King's Prize depending on the incumbent British monarch.
The sport of rifle shooting at Cambridge University has been practised since at least the early 19th century. Beginning as part of the military training of the Cambridge University Rifle Volunteers, it has since been conducted by a number of student clubs, and is currently carried out predominantly by the Cambridge University Rifle Association and Cambridge University Small Bore Club, with some participation by the Cambridge University Revolver and Pistol Club for the discipline of gallery rifle.
