Abhinav Kumar (born 31 August 1973) is an Indian Police Service officer and the current Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttarakhand Police. He is the 12th DGP of the Himalayan state. [2] [3] He is the youngest appointed DGP in India at the age of 50.
Kumar was born in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, and attended the all-boys boarding The Doon School in Dehradun. [4] He then read philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) at Mansfield College, Oxford in the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
Kumar joined the Indian Police Service in 1996. Before becoming the 12th DGP of Uttarakhand, Kumar served as Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Uttarakhand as well as the Special Principal Secretary to Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. [5]
The Director General of Police (DGP) is the highest-ranking police officer in Indian states and union territories. The DGP is appointed by the cabinet and holds a three-star rank. The DGP is responsible for overseeing the entire police force and law enforcement activities within their respective jurisdiction. This position holds significant authority and plays a crucial role in maintaining law and order, implementing crime prevention strategies, and ensuring public safety. The DGP is usually appointed by the state government and works closely with other law enforcement agencies and government officials to uphold the rule of law and protect citizens' rights.
Major General Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri (Retd.), AVSM, is an Indian politician. He was Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2007 to 2009 and 2011 to 2012. He was a Member of Parliament in the 16th Lok Sabha representing the Garhwal parliamentary constituency of Uttarakhand and is a senior member of the Bharatiya Janta Party. Earlier, he was a cabinet minister, Ministry of Surface Transport of the government headed by the former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

On 11 May 2022 Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath removed Director General of Police Mukul Goel from his post for inefficiency and neglecting his work. Thereafter,he worked as DGP at UP Police.
Ashok Kumar is a retired 1989 batch Indian Police Service officer of the Uttarakhand cadre, who served as the 11th Director General of Uttarakhand Police and was succeeded by Abhinav Kumar 1996 batch Indian Police Service officer.He was appointed as Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the Sports University of Haryana on 28 February 2024 and served there till 1 March 2027.
