Abi Sampa is a singer from London in the Indian classical tradition. She appeared in The Voice UK in 2013. [1] She sings Qawwali, Carnatic and Western music. [2] She was the first singer from an Asian tradition to appear on The Voice. She and Rushil Ranjan formed Orchestral Qawwali in 2020.
Sampa was born in about 1986 and brought up in London by her Hindu Tamil parents from Sri Lanka. By the age of seven she playing the veena and she discovered her singing talent while performing Carnatic. [3]
She qualified as a dentist in 2011, [4] and continues to practice dental work in London after her rise to fame on The Voice.
She accompanies herself on the Veena and other Asian instruments, generally with other musicians. [5]
She supported Bryan Adams's tour of India in Ahmedabad in 2018 [6] and was involved in the remake of We Are the World in 2018. [7]
In 2020 during lockdown the duo of Sampa and Rushil Ranjan (aka Orchestral Qawwali) released their first qawwali titled, Man Kunto Maula. Their version of the 700 year old song was viewed four million times on YouTube. [3]
They have played with the Firdaus Orchestra and sold out the Southbank centre. [3]
Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a Pakistani singer, songwriter, and music director. He was primarily a singer of qawwali — a form of Sufi devotional music. Often called the "Shahenshah-e-Qawwali", he is considered by The New York Times to be the greatest qawwali singer of his generation. He was described as the fourth greatest singer of all time by LA Weekly in 2016. He was known for his vocal abilities and could perform at a high level of intensity for several hours. Khan is widely credited with introducing qawwali music to international audiences. He was also a master in Hindustani classical music.
Qawwali is a form of Sufi Islamic devotional singing originating in South Asia. Originally performed at Sufi shrines or dargahs throughout South Asia, it is famous throughout Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and has also gained mainstream popularity and an international audience as of the late 20th century.

Sampa Tembo, known professionally as Sampa the Great, is a Zambian singer, rapper and songwriter. Between 2014 and 2020, she was based in Australia. Her debut solo album, The Return, peaked at No. 12 on the ARIA Albums Chart. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2019 she won Best Hip Hop Release for her second single, "Final Form". In the following year she won the same category for The Return, as well as Best Female Artist and Best Independent Release. In March 2020 Sampa became the first artist to win the Australian Music Prize twice: for Birds and the Bee9 and The Return. The artist was based back in Zambia from late 2020, where she issued her second studio album, As Above, So Below.
