Abid Azad (16 November 1952 – 22 March 2005) was an eminent Bangladeshi poet, critic and literary editor. Azad was the author of 19 books of poetry including Ghaser Ghatana (1976), Amar Mon Kemon Kore (1980), Banotaruder Marma (1982), and Shiter Rachanabali (1983). [1]

Early life

Abid Azad was born as Habibur Rahman, as named by his parents. [2] Nicknamed Renu, he was the second-born of eleven children. [2] He wrote poems with the names Renu and Sumon Al Yousuf. [2] His first book of poems, Ghaser Ghatana, was published in 1976. [2] He studied in Azimuddin School, Gurudoyal College and the University of Dhaka. [2]

Personal life

Azad's wife died in 1987. [2] Their first son, Taimur Rashid, was born in 1982. [2]

In 2012, the government of Bangladesh honored him with Ekushey Padak posthumously for his contributions to Bengali literature.

Khandakar Abdur Rashid, better known as Abdur Rashid Tarkabagish was a Bangladeshi politician and Islamic scholar. His career spans from the anti-colonial independence movement to the establishment of both Pakistan and Bangladesh. Tarkabagish was the second president of the All Pakistan Awami Muslim League, and served as a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan and later the Parliament of Bangladesh. Despite being a member of the treasury bench, he opposed what he considered to be the repressive mentality of the Nurul Amin government towards the Bengali Language Movement.

<i>Alaukik Istimar</i> Bengali poetry book by Humayun Azad

Aulaukik Istimaar is a book which consists of a collection of Bengali poetry by Bangladeshi author Humayun Azad. It was the first book of Azad which was published in 1973 from Khan Brothers and Company, Dhaka. A reprint was published from Agamee Prakashani later. The poems in the book are able to foreshadow the mainstream and style of broad thought in Azad's later life poetry.
