In 1970, Al-Jubouri began his private business in Baghdad, Iraq, after acquiring a contracting license from the Iraqi Contracting Union. During 1970s Iraq experienced a major infrastructure boom fueled by increased oil revenues following the nationalization of the Iraqi Petroleum Company. The government prioritized projects in education, technology, and infrastructure. [2]

Between 1980 and 1988, oil revenues were redirected to fund the Iraqi Army during the Iran–Iraq War, leading to economic challenges. [3] [4] Al-Jubouri then joined the army, and the company shifted its business model to investing in the stock market and renting heavy equipment to the Ministry of Housing and Construction.[ citation needed ]

In 1985, the Iraqi Contracting Union required all contractors to register with the Ministry of Trade and operate under a company license issued by the government, resulting in the establishment of the Abdul Mahdi Muslim Company. [1]

From 1991 to 2003, the United Nations sanctions significantly slowed the Iraqi economy, impacting the company’s construction activities. During this period, the company continued to trade in the Iraqi stock market and generated revenue through dividends from prior capital investments. [5] [ failed verification ]

In July 2005, Al-Jubouri's son, Abather Al-Jubouri, was appointed the company's new CEO. [1] The company secured contracts with new clients, including Fluor, Aim Group, and Spectrum Worldwide. [1] Several affiliated companies were established, serving the Government of Iraq, the U.S. Government, and commercial entities. These included Gruppo Cardini SRL, Spectrum Worldwide (joint venture), Caesar Trading & Construction LLC, and FIC Consultants Engineering.[ citation needed ]

In September 2011, during Mr. Al-Jubouri's time as CEO, all subsidiaries were merged to form a single group, and the company name was changed to AWI – Ability with Innovation.[ citation needed ]
