Abkhazia autonomous region in Georgia and breakaway republic which is not recognized internationally

Abkhazia, officially the Republic of Abkhazia, is a de facto and partially recognized republic on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, south of the Greater Caucasus mountains, in northwestern Georgia. It covers 8,660 square kilometres (3,340 sq mi) and has a population of around 240,000. Its capital is Sukhumi and it is recognised as a state by Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and Syria. While Georgia lacks control over Abkhazia, the Georgian government and most United Nations member states consider Abkhazia legally part of Georgia, whose constitution designates the area as the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia.

City of Sukhumi

The 26 seats of the Sukhumi Municipal assembly were contested by 66 candidates.

Reruns in constituencies no. 3, 19 and 26

Elections in constituencies no. 3, 19 and 26 were judged invalid, in the latter two cases because turnout had not surpassed 25%. Reruns were scheduled for 1 April, with the nomination period running from 20 February to 12 March and the registration period from 13 to 22 March. [apress 1] A total of eleven candidates were nominated in the three constituencies. All eleven were successfully registered, but Aslan Muratia later withdrew from the election in constituency no. 3. [apress 2] In constituency no. 3, the student Daur Dgebia defeated Said Alania and Kiazo Agumava, in constituency no. 19 Rolan Alan, Head of the computer centre of the Sukhumi branch of the Novocherkassk Industrial College of Humanities defeated Mikhail Gabelia and Elza Khagba and in constituency no. 26, Roland Gamgia, Chief Specialist with the Municipal Financial Authority defeated Valerian Aslandzia, Timur Kishmaria and Jansukh Chamagua. Novocherkassk City in Rostov Oblast, Russia

Novocherkassk is a city in Rostov Oblast, Russia, located near the confluence of the Tuzlov River and Aksay River, the latter a distributary of the Don River. Novocherkassk is best known as the cultural capital of the Cossacks, and as the official capital of the Don Cossacks. Population: 168,746 ; 170,822 ; 187,973 (1989 Census); 178,000 (1974); 123,000 (1959); 81,000 (1939); 52,000 (1897).

Districts

In Sukhumi District, 13 candidates competed in 12 single-seat constituencies, in Gagra 53 candidates in 25 constituencies, in Gudauta 35 candidates in 29 constituencies, in Gulripsh 18 candidates in 15 constituencies and in Ochamchira 39 or 43 candidates in 32 constituencies. In Tquarchal 5 candidates stood unopposed while 12 constituencies had more than one candidates. In Gali, all 25 candidates stood unopposed. All elections were judged valid by the Election Commissions except for the election in Ochamchira's Shesheleti constituency where a typo had occurred on the ballot papers. [apress 1]

Sukhumi District District in Abkhazia, Georgia

Sukhum District is one of the districts of Abkhazia, Georgia’s breakaway republic. It corresponds to the eponymous Georgian municipality. Its capital is Sukhumi, the town by the same name, which is also the capital of entire Abkhazia. The population of the district is 11,531 according to the 2011 census. The city of Sukhumi is a separate administrative entity with more than 60,000 inhabitants.

Gudauta District District in Abkhazia, Georgia

Gudauta District is a district of Abkhazia, Georgia’s breakaway republic. It corresponds to the eponymous Georgian district. Its capital is Gudauta, the town by the same name. The population of the district was 34,869 at the time of the 2003 census, down from 57,334 in 1989. By the time of the 2011 Census, the population had increased to 36,775.

Ochamchira District District in Abkhazia/Georgia

Ochamchira District is a district of the partially recognised Abkhazia. Its capital is Ochamchire, the town by the same name. The district is smaller than the Ochamchire district in the de jure subdivision of Georgia, as some of its former territory is now part of Tkvarcheli District, formed by de facto Abkhaz authorities in 1995. The population of the Ochamchira district is 24,629 according to the 2003 census. Until the August 2008 Battle of the Kodori Valley, some mountainous parts of the district were still under Georgian control, as part of Upper Abkhazia.

2009 Abkhazian presidential election election

On 12 December 2009, Abkhazia held its fourth Presidential election since the post of President of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia was created in 1994. The election was won by incumbent president Sergei Bagapsh in the first round with 61% of the votes, thus gaining a second term in office. He was inaugurated on 12 February 2010. Bagapsh competed against four opposition candidates: former Vice President and Prime Minister Raul Khajimba, who came second behind Bagapsh in the 2004 Presidential election, and newcomers Beslan Butba, Zaur Ardzinba and Vitali Bganba. Khajimba had stated that he, Ardzinba and Butba would support each other should one of them reach the second round of the election.

Beslan Butba is a businessman and a former Prime Minister of Abkhazia. He owns Abkhazia's only private television station Abaza TV and is the chairman of the Party of the Economic Development of Abkhazia. Butba was an unsuccessful candidate in the December 2009 presidential election.

On 12 February 2011, Abkhazia held local elections for the 5th convocations of its local assemblies.

The elections for the 5th convocation of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia were held in two rounds on 10 and 24 March 2012.

The 4th convocation of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia was in place from 2007 until 2012.

The 3rd convocation of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia was in place from 2002 until 2007.

The 4th convocation of the Sukhumi City Council held office from 10 March 2007 until March 2011.

The 5th convocation of the Sukhumi City Council has been in office since 10 March 2011.

Valeri Bganba Abkhazian politician

Valeri Ramshukhovich Bganba is an Abkhazian politician who has served as the Prime Minister of Abkhazia since 18 September 2018. Prior to that he was the Speaker of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia from 2012 until 2017. He was elected as speaker on 3 April 2012 and was succeeded by Valery Kvarchia on 12 April 2017. Bganba became acting President on 1 June 2014, following the resignation of Alexander Ankvab as a result of the 2014 Abkhazian political crisis. On 25 September 2014 he was replaced by Raul Khajimba, the winner of the presidential elections on 24 August.

Almasbei Kchach was a former government member and vice-presidential candidate from Abkhazia who committed suicide when investigators came to arrest him in connection with an assassination attempt on President Alexander Ankvab.

On 3 April 2016, Abkhazia held local elections for the 6th convocations of its local assemblies in all districts except Gali.

On 10 March 2001, Abkhazia held local elections for the 2nd convocations of its local assemblies. In total, 266 candidates contested 210 seats. 40 of the candidates were women.

On 13 March 2004, Abkhazia held local elections for the 3rd convocations of its local assemblies, coinciding with early voting for the Russian presidential election of the following day. On 18 February, the People's Assembly rejected a proposal by President Vladislav Ardzinba to postpone the elections to coincide with the October 2004 presidential election, because all the necessary preparations had already been made.

Beslan Eshba is a vice premier of Abkhazia and the head of a sociopolitical organization Apsadgyl. Prior to his current position, he was a deputy commander in the Sukhumi battalion and an advisor to the President of Abkhazia.

Aslan Kobakhia is one of three current Vice Premiers and the current Minister for Internal Affairs of Abkhazia.

Daur Arshba is a politician from Abkhazia. He is the Head of the Presidential Administration, having been appointed by President Raul Khajimba on 10 October 2016, and Chairman of the pro-government Forum for the National Unity of Abkhazia. In the past, he has served as Vice Speaker of the People's Assembly and as Head of Tkvarcheli District. Following the death of Gennadi Gagulia on 8 September 2018, Arshba was appointed Acting Prime Minister of Abkhazia, a position he held until 18 September 2018.
