Absalom Barrett Hallock was an American architect and politician. He served on the Portland,Oregon City Council multiple times and designed various prominent buildings and houses in the Portland metropolitan area.
Absalom Barrett Hallock was born on August 27,1822,in Utica,New York,to Robert Titus Hallock,a doctor,and Amelia Adams Barrett. [1] [2]
In 1850,Hallock left New York for Oregon. He established the architectural firm Hallock &Company with contractor William McMillan. He was commissioned to design and build the Washington County Courthouse,and was soon after commissioned by William S. Ladd to build the city's first brick building,which was located on Front Street. Hallock also designed and built homes for many prominent early Oregonians,including Cyrus Olney and Captain George Flanders. [2]
In 1853,the firm was dissolved and Hallock formed Hallock,Lou,Day,&Company with other local architects. This firm designed and built many of Portland's early buildings. [2]
In 1863,Hallock was appointed city surveyor,and established and laid out grades for the streets in Downtown. He surveyed and mapped many parts of the city,as well as the townsite of Astoria,Oregon. [2]
Hallock was elected to the Portland City Council four different times in 1857,1859,1866,and 1870. [3]
Hallock married Mary Tiffany Bliss on April 22,1855. They had two children,Bessie and Edward.

A Republican,he served as a United States senator from 1867 to 1873.
The Washington County Courthouse in Hillsboro,Oregon is the courthouse for Washington County,Oregon,in the United States. Washington County was established in 1843 and the first government building was finished in 1852. The current courthouse was built in 1928 with an addition and renovations to the structure in 1972. Currently the building houses courtrooms,the county sheriff's dispatch,staff offices,and the office of the district attorney. The county jail was previously attached to the courthouse.
The Hillsboro Civic Center is a government-built,mixed-use development in downtown Hillsboro,Oregon,United States. The development includes the city hall for the county seat of Washington County,located west of Portland,Oregon. Covering 6 acres (24,000 m2),the Civic Center has a total of over 165,000 square feet (15,300 m2) in the complex. The total of six stories for the main structure makes the building the tallest in the city,tied with Tuality Community Hospital. In addition to government offices,the Civic Center includes retail space,public plazas,and residential housing. The complex was built to centralize city government functions under one roof.
William Sargent Ladd was an American politician and businessman in Oregon. He twice served as Portland,Oregon's mayor in the 1850s. A native of Vermont,he was a prominent figure in the early development of Portland,and co-founded the first bank in the state in 1859. Ladd also built the first brick building in Portland and was a noted philanthropist. Part of his former estate,the Ladd Carriage House,is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Portland City Hall is the headquarters of city government of Portland,Oregon,United States. The four-story Italian Renaissance-style building houses the offices of the City Council,which consists of the mayor and four commissioners,and several other offices. City Hall is also home to the City Council chambers,located in the rotunda on the east side of the structure. Completed in 1895,the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 21,1974. City Hall has gone through several renovations,with the most recent overhaul gutting the interior to upgrade it to modern seismic and safety standards. The original was built for $600,000,while the 1996 to 1998 renovation cost $29 million.
Keller Auditorium,formerly known as the Portland Municipal Auditorium,the Portland Public Auditorium,and the Portland Civic Auditorium,is a performing arts center located on Clay Street in downtown Portland,Oregon,United States. It is part of the Portland's Centers for the Arts. Opened in 1917,the venue first changed names in 1966,being renamed again in 2000 in honor of a $1.5 million renovation donation by Richard B. Keller. An extensive remodeling and modernization in 1967–68 effectively changed its original exterior appearance beyond recognition.
Kaiser Westside Medical Center is a hospital in the Tanasbourne neighborhood in Hillsboro in the U.S. state of Oregon. Opened in August 2013 with 126 hospital beds,the Kaiser Permanente facility is planned to later expand to 174 beds. It was designed by Ellerbe Becket Architects and Petersen Kolberg &Associates Architects/Planners. The $220 million hospital includes Kaiser's Sunset Medical Office that opened in 1987 on the west side of the Portland metropolitan area.

Schacht's work was prolific from the 1890s until World War I and he produced commercial buildings including factories and warehouses as well as residential projects,hotels and theatres. He is known for his craftsman architecture style homes and was a founding member of the 1902 Portland Association of architects.

The Hallock–McMillan Building,also known as the Hallock and McMillan Building,is the first and oldest commercial brick building in Portland,Oregon,located downtown at 237 SW Naito Parkway. The building was designed by Absalom Hallock and completed in 1857. It is adjacent to the Fechheimer &White Building. In 1975,it was listed as a "primary landmark" in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) nomination of the Portland Skidmore/Old Town Historic District,the building's designation subsequently "translated" to "contributing property" under post-1970s NRHP terminology.
The Oregonian Building was a building in downtown Portland,Oregon,United States,which served as the headquarters of Portland's major newspaper,The Oregonian,from 1892 to 1948. It was the first steel-framed building constructed in the Western U.S.,and from its opening until 1911 it was the tallest building in Portland. In addition to the newspaper's offices and printing press,in 1922 the building became the home of Portland's first commercial radio station,KGW,which was owned by the Oregonian Publishing Company. A second radio station,KEX,was acquired by the paper in 1933,and joined KGW in new,shared studios in the Oregonian Building. A fire in 1943 forced the radio stations to relocate. The company sold the building in December 1947 as it prepared for a move to a larger building. In June 1948,the newspaper moved to a new building on Southwest Broadway,also called the Oregonian Building. The 1892 building with the landmark clock tower then stood vacant for about two years until it was demolished,in 1950.

Naito Parkway is a major thoroughfare of Portland in the U.S. state of Oregon. It was formerly known as Front Avenue and Front Street and was renamed in 1996 to honor Bill Naito. It runs between SW Barbur Boulevard and NW Front Avenue,and adjacent to Tom McCall Waterfront Park through Downtown Portland.
The K.A.J. and Cora Mackenzie House is a Richardsonian Romanesque revival style building in Northwest Portland,Oregon,situated on the corner of NW 20th Avenue and NW Hoyt Street,just blocks from its partner organization,the William Temple Thrift Store. Although the house is most well-known now for its association with the William Temple community,it was originally commissioned in 1891 by Kenneth A. J. Mackenzie,a medical professional in Oregon,and his wife,Cora Mackenzie,as their private residence. The Portland architecture firm of McCaw,Martin,and White was selected by the MacKenzies to design the house. The Mackenzies owned the house and resided in it until Kenneth A. J. Mackenzie's death in 1920,when it was sold. The house has had several owners since then,eventually being placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. The house has three stories and is roughly 7,100 square feet. The Mackenzie house is a prominent example of the influence of the Richardsonian Romanesque Revival architectural style on the west coast.
