Air Chief Marshal Abu Esrar, BBP, NDC, ACSC was the 14th Chief of the Air Staff of the Bangladesh Air Force. He took over as the chief on 12 June 2015 from Air Marshal Enamul Bari. He is the first four-star air officer (Air Chief Marshal) of Bangladesh. He was promoted to ACM on 16 January 2016. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

Birth

Esrar was born in 1961 in Gazipur to Abu Ayub and Akhtarunnesa.

Air Force career

Esrar joined the Bangladesh Air Force on 19 September 1978. He was commissioned in the GD(P) branch on 1 February 1981. He has worked in most of the squadrons of BAF. He has flown PT-6, AA-SA, Fugi-200, MiG-29. He has also worked as instructor of new pilots.

He has worked as Defense Attache in Moscow, Russia. Before assume the post of air chief he served as Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Operations and Training).

Abu Esrar has undergone many courses in Bangladesh and abroad. He has completed 'Flying Instructors Course' in the United Kingdom and 'Flying Supervisors Course' in Australia. He has undergone training of A5IIIA and MiG-29 in China and Russia respectively.

Esrar was awarded the prestigious BBP medal (Biman Bahini Padak, Air Force Medal in English) in 2013. He is a graduate of Air Command and Staff College (ACSC) located at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama and also is an alumnus of 'National Defence College' (NDC) - Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The Chief Of Air Staff is the professional head and highest appointment of the Bangladesh Air Force. Only pilots get this post. The appointment is held by a four-star air officer and the current COAS is Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan. Prior to 2016, from 2007 the appointment was held by an Air Marshal and from 1972 to 2007 COAS's rank was Air Vice Marshal.

Air Vice Marshal (retd.) Fakhrul Azam, ndc, psc was the Chief of the Air Staff of Bangladesh Air Force from 2002 to 2007. He studied in the prestigious Sargodha College of Pakistan Air Force. He was in the Tempest house (694-T). He left the institution in 1965 after completing his Senior Cambridge. He was commissioned in the Pakistan Air Force on 13 March 1971 from the 51st GD(P) Course. Fakhrul was appointed as the 'Chief of the Air Staff of Bangladesh Air Force' on 8 April 2002 by then-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

Air Marshal (retd.) Muhammad Enamul Bari is a former Bangladesh Air Force officer whose last assignment before retiring was the 13th Chief of Air Staff of Bangladesh Air Force. He retired on 12 June 2015, after over 30 years of service. He also served as the Chairman of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the flag carrier of Bangladesh for nearly four years. He was replaced by Sajjadul Hassan as the chairperson of Bangladesh Biman.

Abul Hossain, ndc, psc, is a retired lieutenant general of Bangladesh Army. He served as the director general of Border Guards Bangladesh. Before that he served as military secretary to President Md Abdul Hamid and as Engineer-in-chief at Army Headquarters, Commandant of Military Institute of Science and Technology, Chief Engineer of Dhaka City Corporation, Director of Special Works Organization and Director of Works & Chief Engineer of the Bangladesh Army. He was also ex-officio Chairman of Shimanto Bank which is a sister concern of BGB Welfare Trust.

Air Marshal (retd.) Jamal Uddin Ahmed is a former Chief of Air Staff, the highest appointment in the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF), and former Chairman of the Board of Directors of Biman Bangladesh. He was promoted to Air Marshal by then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the day of his retirement from the BAF in 2001. Three years later, the Khaleda Zia government voided his promotion, declaring it unlawful because there was no such post in the BAF's organizational chart. He appealed the decision to the High Court, which in 2008 restored his rank of air marshal, ruling that he had been stripped of it illegally.

Air Vice Marshal (retd.) Abdul Ghaffar Mahmud is a former chief of the Bangladesh Air Force. He negotiated the release of hostages from the hijacked Japan Airlines Flight 472. For his role in keeping the situation under control and securing the lives of every single passenger, Japanese government had conferred upon him the "Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star" awards.

Air Chief Marshal Masihuzzaman Serniabat, BBP, OSP, ndu, psc was the 15th Chief of the Air Staff of the Bangladesh Air Force. He took over as the chief on 12 June 2018 from Air Chief Marshal Abu Esrar. He was promoted to Air Marshal on the same day. He was promoted to the rank of ACM on 30 July 2018.

Air Vice Marshal Md Shafiqul Alam BBP, OSP, BSP, ndc, fawc, psc is the incumbent assistant chief of air staff. Earlier, he was assistant chief of air staff (plans). He also served as air officer commanding of Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) Base Bashar.

Air Vice Marshal AHM Fazlul Haque BBP, BSP, ndu, afwc, psc, GD(P) is a retired Bangladeshi 2 Star Air Force officer who has served as Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Operations). He is the founding Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Aviation and Aerospace University. Before join BSMRAAU, he served as Air Officer Commanding of BAF Base Bir Shretra Matiur Rahman.

Air Vice Marshal M Sayed Hossain OSP, BSP. GUP, ndc, psc is the incumbent Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Administration). Prior to Join in the current post, he was Air Officer Commanding(AOC) of Bangladesh Air Force Base Bangabandhu.

Air Vice Marshal Javed Tanveer Khan BSP, OSP, ndc,afwc, acsc, psc is a Bangladesh Air Force officer and currently appointed as the Bangladeshi Ambassador to Lebanon. Prior to this, he was air officer commanding at BAF Matiur Rahman in Jessore.
