The Xperia mini has a "mobile BRAVIA engine" driving a 320×480 pixels 3-inch (76 mm) capacitive touch-screen, a 1 GHz Snapdragon S2 processor, a 5 megapixel camera, 512 MB of onboard RAM, and comes stock with a 2 GB microSD card. The phone is one of Sony Ericsson's environmentally friendly "Greenheart" range, featuring devices made of recycled materials, longer battery life and low-energy chargers, as well as minimal use of paper through reduced packaging and the replacement of the traditional printed user manual with one stored on the phone.

The handset is still budget-oriented, sporting a larger 3-inch display. Its specifications are similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy Pocket Plus, with only minor upgrades such as the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean operating system and the display size. The Samsung Galaxy Pocket Neo, like its predecessors, is still marketed as "Pocket Friendly," because it can be slipped inside pockets easily despite the larger size.

The phone come in the colors black, blue, and red. The phone features a 5.7-inch 720p touchscreen display, a dual camera setup, and comes with. One UI Core 2.0 over Android 10. A similar device, Galaxy M01, was first released in June 2020, which shares some of the features with the Galaxy A01.

This phone was announced on August 27, 2019, and was targeted towards the low-budget category. It is the second Galaxy smartphone not manufactured by Samsung and was instead manufactured by Jiaxing Yongrui Electron Technology. Unlike the first ODM Galaxy smartphone, the China-exclusive Samsung Galaxy A6s, it is available internationally.
